What would it take to license this thing in California?

From what I understand, its next to impossible. I've heard of a guy who brought one down here, and not only was he cited but it was confiscated. I also know a local guy here in town who has two old land cruisers for sale and one was a had the diesel engine in it. I called him about it and he told me the only way to make it legal is to yank the engine and put a gas one into it. He says they are not legal to drive here due to the strict emissions regulations. But times 2 man! I'd love to have this rig! Wonder if Colorado would allow me to have it? lol Keep us posted!

Boy, doesn't that just highlight a fundamental problem with CA's (and most state's) emission control laws... It's cleaner and more efficient than gas, but because it doesn't fit the prescribed rules that were written by political legislators (not mechanics or even scientists), it's illegal. No more common sense - instead it's all about compliance.
I say buy that thing and find a guy who will take a bottle of booze and $65 to pass it, haha. Defiance should be ok when you're actually making an improvement for the environment meanwhile the same legislators are cruising around in their dual and quadruple engine, gas-powered yachts that pump CO2 and carbons into the atmosphere at a stunning rate with zero regulations on them. And their private jets so they can live on the other side of the country and still make it to Washington on Monday morning, haha. Do their jets pump out bubbles and spice?

brian I know you were joking, however people in other states might not be aware a computer actually "passes" a vehicle in California. I bought a new 4Runner in another state and still had to have a smog test to register it in California. The DMV filed the print out I was provided.
On the yacht thing....as of about three years ago gas engine boats were phased in for the smog laws too. High performance boaters were up in arms, especially the crowd that loves carbuerators and swears water and fuel injection don't mix. Boaters also have to muffle up now, and there are marine officers at all kinds of boat ramps with the machines that measure sound in db's. If you're too loud you put the boat back on the trailer.

Wow, really? I have been in the marine industry basically my whole life up until ~2 years ago (Dad owned a boat storage growing up and I managed a marina for several years). I heard back in '08 before I left the marina that the boat smog regulations were coming, but I thought it would take longer than that!
Seriously, our gas cans are the stupidest, most unpractical thing ever! Most people I know end up spilling more gas just trying to get the damn thing to work. I still use old school cans because I like to close my eyes pretend that CA hasn't turned to shit.

If it's not smog or crash certified you can't legalize it and the best you could do it get something like a Visa for your car and you could legally drive it on US roads for a year but it's not easy to get and why would you only want a car with a year expiration date.

Actually you can make a few mods and change play the vin. numbers gambit. and call it a "kit" car and have special tags for it. I don't fully remember all the details but that might be an option. Its how a buddy of mine got a imported
nissan 1999 skyline on the road here and that machine is totaly NOT street legal.
And like everyone else on this thread I too am tired of this "NANNY" state.

You can register anything in CO. Emmission tests are not required anymore. YAY! :frog: All you need is title and insurance.
