What would you choose and why?

Ok guys. In a pickle. I’m shopping for a 4runner. I’m
In the tricky range of 30k limit. It’s tricky because if I jump up 6k more, I can get a brand new runner. But 6k more is a bit out of range.....but doable. Here are my options, any advice would be appreciated.

1. 2016 premium edition. 48000 miles. Single owner, from a dealer, for about 26,500. Financially it fits the bill for me. Cons: it sure what maintenance is coming up, resale would be low.

2. 2017 premium. 18,500 miles. Mint condition, single owner, has trd rims, ceramic coating, racks. Basciallly it’ll come exactly how I’d want it. I wouldn’t have to do any after market add ons. Cons: it’s 36000 which is the price as a brand new base model. The 30000 maintenece is coming. And will put me in debt.

3. 2019 brand new base model. Peace of mind. Cons: will need to do after market stuff, and is slightly out of my price range.

Thanks guys

You've answered it. You can only afford one of those choices. Buy it, hold onto the extra for all the extra costs and any near future maintenance. They last forever. Dont spend more than you have, you will end up selling soon and losing even more $. Make the smart move, it's still a nice car. Or look for something else.

Is the 36k for the OR Premium or SR5? I got my 18 ORP w/o KDSS for 37k, so even if it's the off-road I'd say it's not a great deal.

FWIW I was in the same situation, couldn't find a used deal I thought was worth it so I went new. Not sure you'll find a 2019 deal as good as I got since I waited till they 19s were rolling in to try and get the best deal on an 18.

One thing to consider is what your interest rate will be. Calculate the interest over the life of the loan and compare new vs used. I got 2.4% at my local credit union for new but they said used was 5.2%, so I'd have pay less than $34,800 just to break even over the life of the loan (I put down 4k on trade). Compare your options and make sure you know exactly what you're getting into, and don't forget to calculate in what you think the mileage/age is worth and subtract that. After all, you should be doing better than breaking even on used car new.

Lastly please don't extend yourself. I've done that and it sucks. If you aren't finding both a good deal and in your budget, keep looking, it'll happen.

Thanks guys. Well said. The 36k would be brand new base model. Yes I know it’s pricey. I live in Hawaii and we only have 1 Toyota dealer. This means they don’t cut deals because they don’t have to. It sucks but that’s island living. You guys both gave some sound advice that makes sense. Appreciate it!

Get the brand new truck.

You're paying for criminally high resale value and putting money in someone else's pocket.

When it comes to vehicles with a very high resale value like the 4Runner, going used tends to be a bad idea.

I got a 16 TEP with kdss and trd sema wheels with 34000 miles for 25k. Drove 8 hours to get it. Saved about 6grand based on rates local to me. Broaden your search area.

Broaden your search area.

Though normally I would agree with this, but the OP'er driving more than an hour or 2 in any direction, will require use of a submarine.
I agree with others on not overextending yourself, it's only a vehicle. I've bought used many times, worked out. Bought my Pro earlier this year, paid a lot but I was able to do so.

I agree. All these options are high. Option 1 I can get for below blue book. Hawaii is the worst place to shop for food and cars. We have a SUPER limited used and new market. I would never order a Used car from another state and ship it here sight unseen. Again, we have one Toyota dealer here and they mark up the shit of their cars.

I don't know your finances so I can't say BUT if $30K is your limit I would not stretch another 20% over the limit to get either option 2 or 3. if the 30K budget is what you want to spend and your financially able to go more but just don't want to then I would go # 3.

As many others said I also faced a similar situation a few years back when I was looking. The stupid high resale value is both a blessing and a curse :) Great when you wan to sell not so great when you want to buy.

Your in a catch 22 with a 4runner. If it has a few years on it and low miles, they are always priced close to a new one. I bought a 2014 and saved about $10k over a new one. I struggle with the fact if I got a deal, 4 years old and only got $10k off a new price.

Every body talks about resale being so great. That only applies if you keep it a really long time. You just will not take the beating you will with other vehicles. If you decide you want out after a couple of years, you may take a beating.

I'm an anti debt kind of guy. Set yourself under $30k and DO NOT be in a hurry. If you have the fever, this is not the time to look. You will eventually come across someone that has sat on it a long time and will take what you offer.

I have run into many people that walk out of a dealership with a payment they grow very tired of in about a year.

If maintenance is putting you into debt, I would seriously reevaluate your needs vs wants.

Why are you putting yourself into such massive debt over a car?

I also agree about going with option #1. Save some money and still be getting an outstanding vehicle that'll likely last a long, long time.
