Am I justified questioning the quality of this work, or would you be happy considering this to only have "cosmetic" problems?

no good, grind them out and try again.

it almost looks as if the gas was off, ran out, or too low of pressure. something.
 
I agree with all of you. Now am I being unreasonable in asking that the entire plate should be welded and not just the bottom half of the slider?

In my opinion, they should be fully welded and free of defects when paying for a job.

not even a little bit. I would not pay for that weld job.

I am by no means a professional WELDER, in fact im probably not even a good welder, but I wouldn't put down anything that bad, and I certainly wouldn't send it out the door.
 
Are the scab plates coated with something? It looks like the weldor (and I use that term loosely) just welded through whatever was on there. Or a major shielding gas issue.

Also, absolutely they should be welded all the way around. The open top will just introduce
moisture and eventual rot of the frame. Unacceptable for someone being too lazy to
get the gun up in there.
 
That's not welding. Looks like bubbly snot. Definitely not up to snuff. Clearly this guy has no business charging for welding until he learns how, that's some of the worst I've seen
 
Those need to be completely ground out and the plates re-prepped. I wouldn't weld completely around the plate. Instead I would stitch weld each plate. Weld the corners and in between the welds but not the whole plate. A long, continuous weld will build up too much heat in the frame and may cause it to be brittle. If you want to seal it, use RTV or silicon after it is cooled on the open areas. BTW, you will be hard pressed to completely seal out rust even doing that and painting. Both the slider plate and frame at and around the welding area needs to be bare metal in order for a proper weld.

If your "welder" is using MIG, it needs to be done inside, with no wind or breeze that can blow the gas from the weld, which could also cause the holes you see.

If your welder can't do it right, you need to find another shop that can. Improper welding can screw up your frame and cause serious damage to your vehicle or others around you.
 
Grind it from orbit...it's the only way to be sure.

I saw what you did there.

Mork, you don't need to make a big deal out of welding the top of the plate, it's the side welds that bear most of the stress. The weldor you took that to is a liar or stupid though, to try and sell those welds to you. Get your money back, grind those off yourself, and take them to somebody else.
 
I cant weld for Sh%! and I know that was not good at all! I am agreeing with everybody ^^^that it needs to be redone.

Hope you didn't spend a whole lot for that junk

Those welds show signs of severe contamination and undercutting/improper adhesion in most places. If I were to guess, I'd say there was an issue with the shielding gas when they were welding to cause that type of contamination, their machine settings were off, and/or they were rushing the weld job (actually I can tell you that from the first picture given the shape of the weld.)

They need to ground down, the surrounding area needs to be cleaned properly and the welding done properly. I don't know who did your weld job, but I would suspect that they either aren't certified or just don't care.

Holy Hack Job. If that was a shop that did that, you need to share with us who did that. If it was a "friend", I would re-evaluate your friendship.

Either way, the Porosity riddled throughout those welds makes them structurally unsound. They need to be ground out and re-done.
 
I know like 3 things about welding, one is porosity, and seeing that much of it is shit.

Whomever did that has balls to ask you to pay for that work, in fact they should be afraid you don't charge them for f'king it up so badly.
 
I am struggling with sharing the shops name with you guys because he literally lives just a few blocks down the street. If anyone is evaluating shops in the colorado area and wants to message me though - I will let you know. I only even let him do it because I only have an arc welder and I know that I wouldn't have done it perfectly.

After going back as forth about this with him, he refused to grind out the welds and re-do them. He would only finish welding the rest and "go over" the bad ones. i don't understand his decision on this at all - any shop claiming to do any sort of fabrication would refuse this work. I did my best to remain calm, if not a little ignorant and give him the chance to make it right. Too bad.

So, I'm getting it done right and going where I should have gone in the first place. I'll post up the results.

Why? You haven't misrepresented him. If he stands behind his welds, he ought to be happy to have you post pictures of his work. And if he happens to come onto the board and see this thread, maybe it'll wake him up.

I'd be for letting other forum members know who to avoid, but it's your call.
