What would you do??

So of you may know.... some lady caused a 3 car pile up last week, and my 4Runner ended up with some damage. The insurance Company came through, I dealt with a "Reputable" bodyshop..... Well.... they botched the job!

I had a feeling when they called me to say they couldn't keep the
"4Runner" logo where it was... that they would mess up the work!

Where do I start?? First of all... they failed to re-locate the 4Runner logo to where I had it before... (on the hatch, just over the NEW licence plate location).

Second issue....

When they cut the plastic trim piece so that the carrier latch point would be "Molded" into the plastic trim, they cut it crooked!

Third issue... (well multiple here too!)

Runs, Orange Peel, and grooves left in the paint!

Now the pics don't do it justice.... and you only see the issues when the tire is down... but none the less... THESE GUYS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROS?? Myself and Lee did the previous work.... and it looked better!

Fourth Issue.... The tire carrier no longer matches up with the latch point, and it's hard to get it to sit properly!

(No pic of this... but the holes don't line up, and are off by an 1/8th of an Inch!)

Now, here is my dillema:

The Shop Manager told me that he would have the hatch buffed, get the Tire Carrier lined up right, try to cut the other side of the plastic trim piece so it's at least cut in a uniform fashion, relocate the 4Runner emblem, and fill the holes in the trim piece, AND!!!!! IF I pay to have the windshield pulled... he'll repair and repaint the windshield frame for free.... and give me a killer deal on pain for the Sport Hood! (only thing is... I have to source the parts for the hood)

I can get all this done... but won't have another Rental to drive while he has mine in the shop.

OR......

Do I call the insurance, have him repair/replace the rear hatch and fix all that crap, get a rental, but NOT get the deal on the windshield and hood???


I'm thinking Option 1.... but kinda pissed that I have to go without a second vehicle while he has mine in the shop....

What would you guys do????

well, since a 4 year old re****ed monkey huffing glue could paint better, the last thought in my head would be trying to work out a deal to get them to paint my hood at a discounted price. Have them fix the issues, and take your business somewhere else. I've seriously painted better in my garage. Oh, and sorry the work came out so lousy, but buffing that tail gate won't get the "fish-eyes" out, there is debris under the paint because it was prepped poorly.

I'd be inclined to let the Insurance know that the 'shop' that did the work is incompetent. And you're going to take it somewhere where it can be brought back to the condition it was in before being hit.

I know it's under the tire carrier and all but everytime you swing the tire carrier open, you know you'll be frustrated in what you'll see. You just can't get past it.

It's a big slap in the face, and you know you won't get total satisfaction unless the paint is corrected. If it was done by some kid on the street who wanted to make money on the side I'd understand............small things like this shouldn't be neglected IMO.

I know how much you love your 4runner man! don't settle with this crap

Consult your local laws. In state of California we have laws specifically for situations like this.

If they screwed up the first work, I wouldn't think about giving them more until it is taken care of.

If the insurance company recommended the shop then I would give them a call and let them know the worked isn't right and needs re-done and explain you will need another rental while your vehicle is out of your possession due to their body shop's mistake.

If you found the body shop I would ask them for a rental while they fixed their mistake.

I would expect the paint to be as good as it left the factory, the spare tire to work like it did before the accident, and a new plastic trim piece that is cut like the previous one. If they can't handle the job they took on, then they or the insurance company should pay another shop to do it right.

I've always gone body shop shopping long before I've needed one, and been fortunate enough to find decent to good ones. The insurance companies always want to recommend good enough shops which sucks. The last one I went to for an estimate made sure they bid the bumper cover repair a couple % cheaper than replacement so they could get the labor time. I laughed at them since my with the online discount I could go pick up the new cover cheaper and in stock at the Toyota dealer down the street. No i didn't let them paint it either, that got done at the shop of my choice.

Well thanks folks! I really appreciate all the input, and it seems to be a landslide decision... I'm going to be calling the Insurance Company on Monday, and report this.

Now to just find a good shop here locally that I CAN trust to re-do this shoddy work.....
