Yep, I know all about it. I was way beyond warranty when it showed up at 120k miles. It isn't under pressure and the leak is pretty minimal. Still, I hate leaks. You wouldn't believe how much the dealer wants to fix it.
What would you replace your 4runner with?

given the time quoted and parts needed in the tsb I'd guess around 1500 at dealership prices... what did they quote ya?
My buddy has a b7 s4 wagon with an exhaust, I forget the namebrand of it but it sounds pretty dope. The reason why I said B7 and not B6 is because the B7 comes with the revision for the timing chain guides which doesn't fail as often as the b6s and the interior is much nicer.

Do what your heart's telling you...
I strongly suggest that you keep your 4Runner with the following reasons:
* 4x4 is almost a must to have, living in Minesota. I could not imaging driving in snowy day with 4 & 1 years old kids in the back without it - IMHO.
* With two kids, nothing is big enough, but your 4Runner fits the needs, beside you still have plenty of room in the back for your 70 pounder.
* You have already invested some $$$$ on her, it would be a waste getting rid of her now.
* It's probably paid for already, why spending 12k-15k for another vechicle. You might be able to get her fixed up with way less than that.
* It sounded like you still love her, which is also important.
* The list goes on...
But, if you really really wanted to get rid of her, how about selling her and get ...
* A clean, rust free, low mile & mechanically sound 2008-2009 4Runner
* A Hilghlander, like others have suggested, but I think it's too small for two kids in the back... and the dog.
* Honda Pilot with entertainment system, so the 4 & 1 years old will not keep asking you, how long you have to drive, i.e. something to keep them occupied.
* A clean, rust free, low mile GX470. It will keep you going until the wheel fell off. You might not like the 4.7L, which could keep your wallet empty most of the time - depends on how you drive.
Do more research, test drives, get your wife involved then decide... whichever vechicle makes you & your wife happy.

That's a safety hazard, fix it ASAP. While it's not fixed, don't take her out for a long trip.

By Minimal I mean very minimal. Just some residue between oil changes, not dripping. I would not consider this a safety hazard. Dealer quoted over $2k to fix so that's not going to happen.

True but I've heard that some of the b7s (Yes, even though they updated the guides) have had this problem as well unfortunately.
yea, they are all a hit or miss, it depends on first owner.

Subaru outback is a really nice, spacious, great ground clearance, and best of all reliable vehicle to own. Something to think about.

I would keep the 4runner also. I live in MN too, SW suburbs of Minneapolis and honestly the need for 4x4 is very rare and really not worth putting on the "must have" list. I have even thought about trading in mine for a newer Corolla because of gas mileage and that I put on at least 18k/year now. Doubt I will though because I know what I have and I know the V8's are near bullet proof and last forever.
I sell Subaru in Mpls, if you are looking for an 08 or 09 Outback and don't want the 100k hassle find a 6 cyl Outback (Chain, not belt) or XT Outback (no weak head gasket, but a belt) If spending 12-15k you are going to be getting one with around 100k on it, try to get timing belt done before buying
