What year tacoma will have 4.10 locking rear axle?

After careful consideration, I have decided to not swap in my 4.30 geared e-locking axle because I would have to swap the front diff to match the gears, and I don't really want to pay for a new one, or swap it out.

somewhere on this forum, a long time ago, I found a thread where someone swapped a 4.10 locking rear axle from a Tacoma into a 4runner.

does anyone know this thread? or what year tacoma I need to look for?

I've spent about 45 mins searching and cannot find it. I will continue to look but would really like some help.

also, I have a fully functioning locking rear axle for sale in the Houston area. $250. (that's what I paid.)

Pretty sure the TRD packages didn't come out until 1998 on Tacomas. So, 1998-2004 Tacoma's with the TRD offroad package should have rear lockers. Gearing I think was mostly 4.10's but not positive on that one (I would definitely do the spin test or count teeth to confirm). My old 2001 TRD Tacoma V6 5speed had 4.10's. It sounds like your 96 has an open diff now? If so, I would keep your 4.30 axle housing, drop in a Taco 4.10 elocker 3rd member, and swap axles then. Otherwise you'll have to modify your current housing for the elocker. Hope this helps.

ooh this is interesting. I do have open diffs now.

why would I need to swap axles? are the axle shaft's spline counts different between non-locked and locked rear ends?

E-locker and non-elocker housings are different. The e-locker housing has 2 extra studs and a slot in it.

Taco and 4Runner housings are different. Taco's use leaf springs so they have no coil buckets on the housing.

The axles themselves are the same as long as they are both ABS.

So buy a 4.10 e-locked third. Swap the e-locker axle to your rig. Swap the 4.10 third to that housing. Re-use your current good axles. Sell the leftovers.

I'm pretty sure just about all of the elocked Tacomas are 4.10.

Front 4.3's are so common you shouldn't pay anymore than $100 for one.

they are common, but its a pain to change out in my opinion, i would be doing it on my own and i've never done it before.

Front diff is actually easier then you think.
