Pushrod is the older/traditional way of opening valves. A camshaft in the block is attached to the crankshaft by timing chain. The cam pushes a rod up which opens the valves. The pushrod is just a straight piece of steel - kinda like a pencil but bigger. What I don't understand from the article is how they are doing variable valve timing - has to be something else involved than the old fashioned pushrod opening them

Thanks but I know what a pushrod is. I made that statement as the title because Ford has not had them in gas engines for awhile. Some here may not have even been around when Ford had them in pickups and Mustangs.
Sorry for any confusion.
I think Ford is taking advantage of the reduced emissions requirements that our wise President Trump has done for us and the good of the country.
Port injection, pushrods etc. Big engine decent hp and torque and cheaper to make than the overhead cam engines they adopted in the 90’s.

I used to talk to someone who was an engineer for the corvette. I'm more of a turbo/import person (but did have a 5.0) so I don't remember really understanding it, but he said there was zero reason to switch off of the push rod design, simple and made loads of power no problem, cheaper and smaller
I just wish Ford had made it a 7.2 or a 7.4.
Gonna be lots of confusion in parts stores since there were already over a million 7.3 engines used in Fords. The much loved Powerstroke diesel...mine has 230,000 trouble free miles on it.
The parts store comment comes from the time I needed some brake parts for my Ford pickup- the young man at the counter told me his computer showed zero brake parts for Ford pickups- I asked to see the screen- he was trying to lookup "break" parts....I'm not joking. We are doomed.
