What's it worth? Potential 1st Gen buy

I have been toying with the idea of picking up a 1st gen for a while now. Primarily looking for something that in good cosmetic shape i.e. minimal rust, complete interior, no dents, etc. There seem to be some out there that are reasonably priced but they go fast. Missed out on a nice 1989 here the other day. Just couldnt get there fast enough.

One thing I have noticed, as anyone looking at 1st gens probably has is prices are all over the place. So I thought I would post up an example of one I found locally to double check before I over paid. The photos are not the best, but they are all I have right now. Will be going to check it out Thursday I believe.





It is a 1985 with the solid axle. EFI 22re with 5 speed. Moonroof, new paint, new exhaust, 33" Boggers (not excited about this).

Those are all the details I have right now.

Any thoughts on a good price for something like this?

If the frame is solid and rust is minimal 3500 is a great price. A truck like that would fetch 5-6000 easy. Sr5 1985 package and trail gear rear bumper that's a no brainier.

That seems like a fair price to me.

Especially if everything is in working order.. If the tires are in good shape (80% +).. Then most of your money is going to those and the exterior bolt ons.

Probably just looking at some drivetrain rebuilding and hopefully nothing major with the motor.

Of course its a fair starting point, so anything less would be better.. That truck looks clean too.

All depends on what you plan on doing with it.

Great price for a clean, 5 speed straight axle on 33"s. You find people asking twice that for one of those in Cali.

Glad to hear it is priced right based on the photos. I hope it turns out that when when I see it. Will be sure to post pics if it goes through.
 
I paid 3500 for my 85 SR5. Bone stock with the engine on the way out. She was very clean with only a touch of rust on the passenger rear fender. Thanks to the chrome trim, hate that stuff. My interior was almost spotless. I will have to rebuild my front axel sooner than later as it is leaking at the usually places for a 30 year old rig with 250k. But that's easy enough in a weekend.

And just a bit of advice here too, while that price is actually pretty damned good, especially if its all in working order, check the vin with your local toyota dealership before you buy it if anything seems out of place!

Buddy of mine just tried to buy an 88 4runner in Modesto, CA, asking almost 6 grand and only 120k on the odometer, but when he ran the vin at the dealership before flying out to buy it, it came back as having 220k in '05, and in '10 it had 64k and is now flagged with corporate toyota for odometer tampering!

Lots of douchebags out there trying to get way more than what the vehicle is worth, and most of us know just how easy it is to turn the odo back on a 4runner/truck...
 
Its a shame all those holes were punched in the body for the bushwacker flares. Not the end of the world though. You should ask him if they were installed after paint, or before, and if it was before ask him what shape the fenders were in underneath because they are known to cause a lot of rust. Prob not the case here though looks pretty clean.

Thats definitely a great price, many would pay that for a clean IFS let alone an 85 with a straight axle AND the EFI option.

Great price. If I didn't already have 2, I'd seriously would look into driving down to New Orleans before you could get it!
 
Ok, to cure any lingering curiosity - I did end up picking up this 4Runner. I secretly hoped that the interior was going to be destroyed when I got there so that I was not compelled to buy it, but I was surprised. Original seats and carpeting (and decently clean), inclinometer, cruise, moonroof, working rear glass, nearly new 33" TSL Boggers, no exterior body rust, only one dent in the body - in the rear hatch, new paint.

So of course there is bad news too, but it did not outweigh the good in my book. There are some holes in the cargo area floor - I'll post in a new thread with some more detailed pictures. They are on either side were the wheel well meets the floor. The guy was not troubled by them and therefore never saw cause to address them. The tires are just too big. The guy drove it 30 miles a day to and from work it seems, and he did admit to regretting buying such large heavy tires. Top speed is about 55, no fifth gear, and they will rub with even slight compression in a turn. I have already picked up one v6 4.88 third member to cure part of this problem. Some type of lift will be in order to cure the rubbing. The paint is new, but it is a little amatuerish. Not a smooth finish, but it looks much better than original paint at this age typically does.

Plan is just to drive it - weekends, work on occasion, and when the weather is nice and the top comes off. Because of this, I wasnt specifically looking for a 1985 with the solid front, just worked out that way.
 
Awesome! I was gonna say, try to sell off the TSLs and get some more stock-sized tires. Get some of that drive ability back.
 
I thought about that. I may advertise them a little and see what I can get for them. But the problem is that the PO put those goofy, giant fender flares on. He bought the TSLs after he did so because he said it looked ridiculous with 31s, and I believe it. Maybe some wide 31s would work? Considering all this, I thought it might just be easier and more cost effective to pick up some 4.88 gears. Already have one set. Picked up for $200 here locally. Will be swapping those in the rear and dropping the front drive shaft out until I pick up a second set for the front.
 
If those are bushwhacker style then there was no drilling into the body to put them on, so I'd get them off of there asap since they'll rub into the paint eventually.


But really, you stole that thing, even got the badass SR5 Vertigo seats.
