Yep two antennas, factory radio can use whichever has better reception. Seems more like a back up system on the power antenna equipped vehicles.

Timely post. We were cleaning up our "new to us" 3rd gen yesterday and I noticed the same thing in the passenger side glass and was going to post here to ask what it was.

Its probably an AM antenna in the windshield hes talking about. The diversity picks the less noisy of the two. I don't know 4runners have AM antennas in the windshield, but other cars do. Typically a combo rear defroster/AM antenna.

I never gave it a 2nd thought that it was antenna/reception related. I always figured it was just a rear window defroster as is on the hatch glass. It only made sense that it was on the passenger side and not on the drivers side because you can only turn your head to the right when checking blind spots.

When I installed the Scion radio I did that to utilize both antennas.

When I swapped out my radio I combined them, then tried to use AM radio. It sucked and couldn't pick up anything. My head unit can't decipher the signal when they are combined. I took out the diversity antenna (rear quarter panel antenna) and it improved. I still rarely use AM radio though but that Y plug failed miserably on my Alpine head unit.
I have the two antennas Y'd together on mine, then I added a switch to keep the power antenna retracted.
What I've noticed is that the rear window antenna works so well (on FM at least, I never use AM?) that by the time I'm far enough away that the signal starts to fade - raising the power antenna barely improves it.
So I rarely ever raise the power antenna, it stays retracted and not wearing out and jamming.

This is exactly my setup and experience. My power antenna is never used anymore. I do listen to AM radio for football coverage and don't notice any signal loss with my older JVC head unit.

Speaking of antennas, I ordered the Y cable to use the rear window antenna (and the adapter).
I am wondering if anyone has a link to an antenna to replace the "universal" antenna that is currently on my truck. It sits all funny and works like crap. I know there is the taco whip mod but I don't feel like spending that much.
Anyone know of a plug in play "universal" antenna that fits these trucks well?
I also ordered a new single din JVC bluetooth head unit. My old one works fine but I really want bluetooth and it was only 80ish bucks on amazon.

Ok thanks. Sounds like it’s hit or miss. Some guys say it has worse reception with both and some say it’s better. Seems like it might have to do more with what brand aftermarket head unit they have than the antennas. I guess I’ll just buy the Metra adapter and see what works best for me
agree with above, another advantage is you can have power antenna down when on back trails.
however I now have everything for the taco whip, just not installed it yet.

With the OEM radio, both the motorized and rear window antenna are used for FM. AM will only use the front antenna (the 'diversity' technique doesn't work with AM demodulation).
