You're not the only one wondering that; however, I'm not sure if everyone has this feature. What are the specs on your runner?
The only think I have used it for is a coffee mug that had a really wide rubber base that required a flat surface. I have heard a could people say laptop, but it would have to be a pretty small laptop to work there, plus it would be a horrible angle to control it.
I have contemplating converting it into a cup holder that holds the standard can size better than the factory cup holders.

Yes I've heard it referred to as the "burger tray" as well. I think it's used for as a writing surface. I have seen someone put a dry erase sheet there so they could quickly write something down.

i'm convinced it was designed specifically to hold a 6 pc mcnugget box for easy access to dipping sauce! :yummie:
it's another WTF tray.
I have that same item and the salesman referred to it as the Big Mac tray. It made much more sense than a writing pad tray. My Tahoe has a writing pad that flipped up from the center console. Now, here's where the Tahoe's note pad tray made more sense. The Tahoe's concole box sits lower in betwen the two captain's chairs. The pad flips up and positions forward to where your hand would be. The 4Runner's flip tray is too high and too close in for anyone to write notes. Your arm/elbow would be hitting the chair sides trying to get back far enough so your writing hand can write. So it functions almost OK for a burger tray. However, look at Ford's Excursion...yes, that is the Titanic, but it has a big cup area right in front where it fits McD's supersized fries just where your hand reaches down to grab another without taking your eyes off the road or having your elbow knock into something.

A Palm Pilot Tray? Now that's probably what it works best at.
Works well as the cell phone tray too. No need to go digging into your purse or trying to unholster it from the belt.
Of course when I have some CD cases in the slot right in front of the tray, I can't flip the tray open.....

you cant put anything inside, unless business cards to pass out while u see a hottie at the light,

what generation is my 4 runner< i have no fawkin clue.. it's 03, silver, sport edition.. that smells when i hit the gas hard, but tomorrow, it maybe fixed or not...
on last thing, whats the differential button for?:awais:

i guess car makers try to make use of every little nook and cranny. what do you guys use the little flip open tray underneath the hvac controls for? it's a funny 'b' shape and just a little too shallow to put cd's in. i keep my mints and receipts in there!

yes, as much as I admire Toyota quality, not everything they do is above and beyond reproach.....sometimes it boggles the mind....sometimes it's Japanese infatuation with electronic gizmos......
So the little tray underneath the HVCA controls? I couldn't fit the garage door opener on the overly thick sunshade so I tossed the opener into the flip out tray there. Then I found that I could not open the tray to get at it when I had a commuter mug in the cup holder......and it's a short mug too...ggggrrrr.....then I found that I could slide the door opener on the second sun shade that is right above the main sun shade so the main sun shade is just a little bit lower. I don't put anything in the pop out tray under the HVAC controls. Too small for even a nice snubnose Smith and Wesson .38 Special or a Sig Sauer .380 ACP.....I guess "04Runner" could store his condoms and motion-lotion in there.......
Speaking of boggles the mind....I can't never get the right setting on the temperature on that "new and improved" HVCA control......sometimes old technology like a rotating knob just works better.....I don't need to know what temerpature I want, or whether it's 71 or 72 or 73....in my old car, I just turn the knob until I am comfy...simple.....
and that electronic MPG readout is just a tad too optimistic.....my actual fill up and miles calculation is always about 1-1.5 MPG below what the 'puter shows....
I still can't figure out what those two way-too-small compartments in the rear cargo area right on top of the wheel wells are for besides Martha Stewart popourri cache sacks....
Now now, guys, the lady should be called a lady and not a "girl".

the one above the right wheel well is for the dvd nav unit and the left one i keep one of the cargo nets in. this truck kinda reminds me of my tackle box, a little compartment for each lure!

Makes a great food tray. I do just about everything in my 4 Runner, and having a 19 month old daughter, it's impossible keeping her looking new. So I can use that as a small table for my breakfast bagel, my lunch burger, and sometimes when I am out with my friends and drink too much, I use it for my quick snack at McDonalds on the highway.
