What's the most gas you have ever put in your 5G 4rnnr?

Just callin' 'em as I see 'em. Lazy is the word. If I have to mention what a headache putting in a new fuel pump because it burnt up from heat and poor inlet conditions is then anything I say won't be understood in this thread.

Then maybe you should have shared your concerns instead of going on a rant and calling people lazy when in fact they may be ignorant of the fact that the fuel serves more than one purpose.

Why? Do you actually think they would understand? Do you think they would understand that if they had several gallons of gasoline in their vehicles at all times they would have:

A means to get to higher ground or away in case of a flood, tornado, fire, hurricane or anything else common to our nation?
A means to charge communications devices to call and report during disasters?
A heat source if power goes out in the winter and they are freezing?

Sorry Billy, there is a difference between ignorance and lazy. If they won't do something as simple as making sure they have gas in the tank for common emergencies then do you think they would do it for something more complex like fuel pump life? Me either.

Maybe lazy is not the proper word. How about complacent and entitled? These are the same people who scream the loudest when something happens too.

And this is why I never leave my truck in the garage close to E, I'll tank it up before heading home even if I'm tired and the weather sucks. Just paranoid that way.

It's not paranoia, it's called responsibility. Most of us here have others, kids, spouses, parents, etc that depend on us for a variety of reasons. Running the tank to empty is not responsible to anyone, except Kramer.

I know to some this sounds toooo "prepper" ish, so to speak; but in reality it's just good practice.

I learned this the hard way after Hurricane Sandy rolled by last year and took out our gas delivery infrastructure for several weeks. Sitting there with an empty tank and no gas station selling gas sure makes you wish you had gassed up before the fact, lol.

Why do you guys run it down so low??? How hard is it to fill up at 1/4 a tank or so? Are you just lazy or just like putting things off until the last minute? Don't give a reason of "I'm too busy" or "The kids are too demanding" or some BS answer like that. Also don't tell me there are not enough gas stations around either. There were 159,000 of them in 2012. There are places where stations are few and far between but I can bet those of you who run it til the light comes on don't live there. Those guys who do PLAN AHEAD.

Geez. Buy the gas now and save headaches later. Those few cents you save are never worth the hassle.

Read my OP... I don't routinely run to empty. And I don't run all over town with the gauge on empty looking for the cheap gas. However, there are many places out here in the west where it can be 50+ miles of interstate between gas stations (or between gas stations you are willing to use), and there are even a few where it is 100+ miles.

I have been caught before o road trips where a station I counted on filling up at was closed. I ended up having to drive 7 mi off my route on the interstate to find gas (and had to buy whatever was there), because at that time, I didn't know the safety margin of the gauges in my Sequoia (that I traded for my 2012 runner). Knowing the margin would have told me whether I could make the next gas station on the interstate, or not.

I think that is a pretty good reason for wanting to know how my car behaves... just like folks here recommend testing the anti-lock brakes, VSC, and all the other safety devices in the car. It is much better to be informed about how your car behaves, than be caught by surprise.

So yes... I occasionally run the car down near empty while I am in town where gas stations are available (but not in the winter!).

I generally never go below 1/4 mainly don't want to stress the fuel pump. I went down to the indicator lite came on purposely to gain information that may help me in a fuel bind down the road. Lite comes on and I still have a sixty mile range. Good to know IMO.

This is why I don't fill up at 1/4 tank.

You should try not to keep pumping once it clicks since it's stopping for a reason. You might eventually mess up something up because of all the overflow gas going into the charcoal canister I think. I've posted a link about this before, but forgot where, lol.

Most I've filled up is ~21.5-22 gallons, and that was running with the low gas light on for a bit. Right when the low gas light comes on, it's ~20 gal for me.

You gave me (Link#1 and Link#2) to me and I bookmarked it, see I listen. :)

35 as I recall.
I cannot find, or remember, where I read it, but I thought the fuel light displays when 3 gallons are left in the tank. *edit* on second thought... It also might have been a baseless observation I made by hand-calcing the mileage driven vs my mpg and correlating it to the remaining miles I had on the display too. If it was the later, which was months ago, I've forgotten to check up on my hypothesis.

This jives then with my experience. I put 20 gal in right after the light came on. I generally get 20 -> 22 mpg on hiway so I give myself a 60 mile grace period after said lite comes on.
My dash lite indicator of miles left to go has never been spot on.

FWIW, my '04 tacoma was the same way with the fuel lite coming on leaving me with 3 gallons. I was really glad once on a lonely stretch of road with my young daughter having that lite come on and knowing I had three gallons left. I used every bit of it getting to the interstate for gas. Lesson learned, I won't pass that last chance gas again(because it was on the wrong side of a divided hiway) thinking I can make it to the interstate. I never go below 1/4 these days.

yikes!

this may not work for many, depending on their commute, and use. but ive recently started filling up every payday, regardless of how much fuel i have left.

i used to alwasy run it as low as possible, i friggin HATE stopping to get gas. it irritates the shit out of me.
but, as gas prices go higher...the longer i wait, the more it costs me.
the amount i spend ends up being the same, but atleast i spread the cost over time, instead of dropping $60+ at one time.

You do realize that we can read what you are saying about us, right? :preggers:

I'm disappointed that 1E didn't present us with a formula for calculating the optimal refeulling point, including such parameters as:
minimum fuel level before damage to fuel pump
distance to nearest gas station
fuel price
% ethanol
time saved by filling the tank less often
foreseeable and unforeseeable natural and manmade disasters
and, of course, tire pressure and ambient air temp.

Ideally we would need a spreadsheet w/ all the calculations automated - so we could just input our parameters and it would spit out the optimum refuelling pt.

Actually, I've done all of this and seamlessly reprogrammed my ECU and low fuel warning light. I can do the same for you guys for $100. The light will come on at the optimal refueling point.:D

I know I live in a state that is lucky enough NOT to have Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Tsunami's and other natural disasters,......and call me a nut but I ALWAYS have enough fuel either in my truck or in my gas cans to get me out of the city and into my place out in the boonies in UT....along with my Go bag, water/food and enough ammo to run my M4, Glock, Mossberg and AK AND enough poop bags for my dogs poop...
