What's the stock keyless entry button do?

auxiliary

New member
I have a 1997 sr5 with the factory alarm and keyless entry.

I have a remote that has two buttons on it. The top button will lock/unlock the doors. The bottom button doesn't do anything. I press it and hold it down and the red light flashes on the top, yet nothing happens on the car.

I heard that this button my lower the back window but nothing happens. I've tried holding it down for an extended amount of time and nothing.

Any idea on how to fix it or reprogram it to work properly? Only the bottom button though! The top works great.

Ok, I have to ask: Does the back window roll down using the interior switch and the key cylinder on the exterior?

The window goes down on the switch inside.

Didn't know it could go down using the key....

but the window works fine.

Well if your back window works like my 2000 and my old 1990, then turning the key in the tailgate should operate the window too. I'm not sure if the remote back window operation is on the 97 and 98 remotes, but the owner's manual should specify

Show us your remote. There is no red light to my knowledge. You may have an aftermarket remote/alarm.

Otherwise, if you still have the stock alarm, you may have the incorrect remote. You should have LOCK, UNLOCK, and a Window button, shown here:

I guess the 97 is different from your year.

Mine has the toyota logo on the remote and the security arming light says toyota on it inside the car.

Here's the remote I have.

I never had keyless entry on mine. I have a Viper 791XV.

You have an aftermarket alarm, not factory.

(BTW, the wiring from the aftermarket alarm is likely just wired to your factory LED)

You do not have an aftermarket security system. You have the dealer installed TOYOTA RS3000 VIP (vehicle intrusion protection) system.

According to the manual the bottom button is for "Secondary Toyota vehicle equipped with RS3000 or Keyless Entry System".

It does not control the rear window.

It's not aftermarket bud, in the late 90's toyota was constantly changing their alarm systems(hence all different fobs), most of the the earlier runners got stuck with just simple keyless entry,.... 2000+ were lucky enough too get the actual alarm system with panic button and rear window option like the one you posted.. i know because while I first got my runner i got sick of the whole unlock lock key thing lol, unfortunately i got stuck with this thing.

My truck came with a Valet Remote Start, love it, best thing since sliced bread. I am going to get one for my Wifes car soon.

Can start my truck up and warm up the engine and cool down the cab in summer or warm it up and defrost in winter while still laying in bed.

I just press the yellow button twice and it starts the car. I started my car this morning while in my upstairs bedroom after I just got out of the shower and my parking spot is a minimum of 50 yards away. ( It is supposed to work up to 1/4 mile away but I kinda doubt it works quite that far away)
I went out about 3 minutes later, truck warmed up and cab nice and cool.
Will be even more handy in the winter to defrost the windshield.
It is also nice to be able to just leave the truck running with AC on and lock the car when I just need to leave the vehicle for a few minutes at say a convenience store or someplace like that.

I don't doubt that it was a dealer installed option or something, but without a Toyota logo or anything, I still doubt it's factory. I've gotten tons of 97's on trade and I have never seen that fob auxiliary posted.

And yes, Nunyabiz, remote start is awesome. Be sure to get a 2 way with your wifes car, best thing ever. Your remote will tell you what is being tampered with which is always super helpful.

Here's my remote from a few years ago and here's the current DEI model remote for the Viper brand:

I actually use the Clifford one since they're the same company, their remote just looks cooler.

But, as long as you're looking for one on your wife's car, here's the Viper 5902 remote:

It also features bluetooth and a color screen. 1/2 mile signal strength if I recall correctly, which is handy if someones tampering with your car.

Those look nice but don't think I am going to spend $500+ for a remote start though and then another $100+ to install.
I think the valet 561R which is what I have and works great is only like $50 and maybe $50 to install, so $100 or less total.

You and assuming costs. I was just trying to show you some cool options you might have liked. Others on here seem to appreciate that kind of thing.

Oh gee, look, Viper 5902V Vehicle Security W Remote Start Color LC

It's only $300, not $500+. This is just like you assuming that only $100k+ cars come with real leather. Learn to research before you make stupid assumptions.

EDIT: Duh, I forgot, it's just you recommending what you have because you're too narrow minded to see other options. Good thing your previous owner installed some stuff for you, or else it'd be stock or nothing!

Wow didn't mean to strike a nerve, I do appreciate info and those are killer but just not for me is all.
The one I looked at on the Viper site was actually $599.
But even $350 plus what ever install is, is far more than I need to spend on a remote start.
and I didn't "recommend" anything to anybody just simply showed what I have is all.

No need to be an ass.

Guess you missed the part where I said mine has the toyota logo on it...

It's 100% factory. Maybe a dealer option but it's toyota.

I have the exact same one as auxiliary. It has a toyota logo and i'm pretty sure it's factory.

I was curious about the bottom button as well because mine doesn't do anything either. I'm also not a big fan of how the lock and unlock button are the same. You really can't trust the remote to lock up because you press the same button and it makes the same noise.

I have the same remote for my '97. The truck is new to me and I also can't figure out if the second button is 'supposed' to do anything or not.
