What's this part?

2004 4wd are v6. It looks like a dust shield/skid plate protecting the rear end of the front drive shaft. It rusted and is sort of touching the exhaust pipe beneath it, probably causing the intermittent rumbling sound at very low speed.

Does anyone know what part this is and the part#? Also the bolt holding it in place. Thanks!

Lol yeah that whole piece is totally rusted. I'm sure I can rip it off with two fingers.

Thought the same thing.... I'd probably just remove the shield for now and focus my attention on the truck's frame rust. :shocked:

What does this "heat insulator" do anyway? Protect the driveshaft from the exhaust heat I guess?

Judging by how rusty under my truck, it's probably already missing some parts that I don't know about...

It reduces heat exposure on the universal joint. High heat can thin the lubricating grease and reduce the operating tolerances in the joint, which will produce excessive wear over time.

That's not true at all. I'm in Georgia and there's one on the 4Runner in my garage.

But seriously, it is indeed a shield for the driveshaft. Took mine off to access one of the zerks last time I greased it. Wear eye protection if you remove it, there's all kinds of grit and gunk that falls when you move it.
