What's with the URLs?

Can a mod or admin explain why every single link to T4R is now different?

To get to General Discussions, you'd have to visit:

www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions/

But now, you have to visit:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions-84/



These few numbers have literally killed all of the links posted on this site. All of my bookmarks no longer work, they all go to the home page. Was adding some numbers to the subforum URL's really this necessary?

This also includes the links on my build thread chapter selection and I'm not ecstatic to go back and fix over 100 of them... not to mention the million links we've all placed elsewhere.

What gives?!

I noticed as well. Perhaps it is a temporary forum config glitch, but I posted a workaround in another thread. There seem to be a few additional steps required beyond merely tacking on the subforum id:

It seems the URL format has changed.

I suggest holding off on modifying any links in your posts until hearing back from site admins. This might be a temporary glitch, but even if this is the New Hotness for URL formatting there might be a simple way for the server to keep the old style links working as they were written.

Verily. Given the current format changes it would be straightforward to construct an Apache mod_rewrite RewriteRule with a few regex capturing groups and emit a 301 redirect in order to keep all the extant links in threads & search functional.

Of course, it might just be a simple checkbox in the forum software control to toggle the URL style back to the way it was.

It seems likely that this was an unintended side effect of a configuration change rather than the result of the site admins waking up today and thinking, "Hm, what would be a great enhancement for this site? I know, let's break all the forum links in every post made so far!"

Haha, just be patient—you can still get your t4r.org fix via the manual workaround for now.
 
This also seems to affect the searchability of the site from google. That is HUGE. The on-site search function sucks pretty hard and now you can't get right to write-ups from google. I know you can still work around it, but seriously, I hope they work this out pretty quick.
 
I hope they change it back. I have meticulously saved and sorted threads in my bookmarks for future reference and now it's worthless.
 
And here I thought this site couldnt get any more screwed up... All of the hundreds of links in the buyers guide and my build thread are now dead. Im just gonna leave it like that because I dont have the time to fix it.

Not good. I have a library of saved how-to links built up over the years that are now useless. This has to be fixed.
 
Lets put this in terms that the ad-loving admin can understand..


Ads pay you based on the value of the adspace which is determined by the amount of site traffic.. Sh!t like this causes people to not come to this site, aka less traffic.. Less traffic equals less valuable ad space, which means less money.

To summarize, Sh!t like this= less money for you.
 
Well said Ripcord.

Money is, after all, the endgame as far as site ownership is concerned.

I'd love to see the graphs/stats on site visits over the next few days. :wow2:
