What's your favorite oil?

I've been using M1 HM 5w30/YZZD3 in my wife's 4th gen--but I've been thinking of moving to a 0w30 or 0w40 for hers and my 3rd gen.

With a Charleston, SC location, what do you expect to gain from an 0W-## ? Unless you're spending time close to Canada in the winter, you're really only concerned about the "30" part of the spec. Considering Toyota back spec'd most of us to 20 weight at some point, the only thing that's likely to happen if you go to a -40 is less mpg. FWIW, I've stuck to the 5W-30 spec despite the 5W-20/0W-20 updated spec.

For this T4R, I got the dealer to do an oil change before purchasing, because why not. I see a Napa Proselect Filter and probably generic 5w30 from some oil drum. Still debating what I want to run in this when I have the time to change it out. Carfax shows oil changes ever 5-6k over the last 2 years, but at quick lube places so it's probably been generic dino oil + cheapo filter.

143k with no hints of oil burning and I spot no leaks in the engine bay so far. Been thinking of M1 HM or PP HM + Fram Ultra from Wallyworld and calling it a day.

Toyota changed specs to 5w20? When? If so, that'll help out as I stash 5w20 for the wife's Rav4.

According to this chart, which I can't vouch for the authenticity of, we were back spec'd for 5W-20. However, I can't see why 0W-20 wouldn't also be acceptable if 5W-20 works...the difference being viscosity at cold temps, not hot.

I want to say it happened around 2008ish, maybe? At one point, it was fairly easy to find the original TSB from Toyota on the web announcing the back spec pretty much across all US models, but I'm not quickly finding it now.

My understanding from BITOG is that even at warm temps even '0 weight' oil is technically too thick to fully protect at startup, where most wear still occurs even in 'thinner' oils. The oil thins as it warms up, not the other way around so standard designations are practically inverted.

There's a lot of nuance to it, but there are many users there that use 0wXX oils in their 5xXX or 10xXX rated engines with no ill effects.

Just something I was considering.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I use Mobil 1 0w40 and here is a report of using it (for the most part - previous OC, 6/14 to 6/15, had about 1.5 quarts of M1 5w30 High Mileage).

Barring what seems to be possibly a TINY seep of coolant, its a good report and nothing to worry about. I could run it longer, but at the moment I only drive about 5k a year so that is how long I go.

0w40 is supposedly Mobil's best oil and using it shows no harm whatsoever.

Running M1, 5W-20 with OEM filter since forever. I change it every 5K, and that happens about 1x a year.

The brilliant people are Google for allowing facts and information to be found and Blackstone Labs for having the scientific ability to produce a detailed picture of how an engine is running. Give it a whirl.

Without a doubt, I am sure you had Toyota engineers sign off on all the non-OEM products that are currently on YOUR vehicle.

Or maybe just think for two seconds before you make snide, hypocritical comments.
