What's your highest computer average mpg?

Ok, I know that the computer mpg average isn't quite precise, but by this number I am getting some good average mpgs!

My commute to work is 60 miles one way. So I thought for fun, let's see how high I can get that computer mpg up. I filled up prior, reset the computer, drove with medium to slight heavy traffic, roughly about 65 mph on cruise control, sometimes having to take off cruise b/c of traffic getting down to 45-60 mph. Had a couple of medium grade hills and one slightly large hill.

Believe it or not, I got 26.8 mpg!!! :bugeye: Well technically I got 26.9 mpg the second I took it off cruise to get on the off ramp but it only teased me with it. On my way back home, the most I got was 26.8 as well. Pretty cool I might say! :dancin:

and for non-highway driving? Well that's another story that don't look so pretty.

So how high have you gotten that average mpg computer?

my highest? or AVG??? my highest was like 89MPG, ofcourse that was going 60mph down a mountain!


but AVG. is about 21

I forgot to mention I have a V6. What I should do is go refill my gas and manually calculate to see how close the computer is. That would be interesting to know. When I previously filled up, the gas nozzle clicked to stop putting gas in which I put in another gallon going half way on the handle. Seems to allow me to do this each time I fill up. So do I do this again letting it click then me going to another gallon so I get the same amount in? And what gives, when you fill up does your runner do the same thing? Allow you to add more gallons?

yes, that it pretty standard however it is not recommended to fill to the brim esp. in hot weather to allow for some expansion. I have a V6 also. typically, when the computer says mileage most here have found that they are 2 mpg below the computer from what I have read.

i actually for the first time since owning the car went through a whole tank and filled it back up (usually i get gas around 1/4 tank) and i reset the trip thing every time i get gas, this last time it said 21.5mpg after filling it up i calculated 20.5 so it wasnt that off for me. thats pretty close. but ive had it as high as 26mpg before...i normally drive fairly flat land and stay steady on the pedal

I haven't done a lot of highway driving nor have I taken a road trip yet in the 4Runner. I have a road trip coming up in November, so hopefully I can beat my current record of 24.0:

My overall average (not calculated by the computer) is 20.7mpg. I, unfortunately, do a lot of city/stop-n-go driving.

If you turn off the A/C and run a constant 45, you can get about 30. If you draft behind a tractor trailer on the interstate, you can get about 27 doing around 75.

19.0 even with my V8. I live in CO (higher altitude = less HP) and I reset it at my last oil change. I have done a trip to Crested Butte in the mountains, driven to work (mostly highway...but frig'n C-470 traffic ) and run'n around town. That was about 4k miles ago. I think the computer is fairly accurate from what I've observed.

I'll reset it again when I get my 265/70/R17 Revo's, add 3%, and figure it out again.

I can't complain about almost 20mpg with my "gas guzzling" V8 SUV.

Just to check it out, I once hit reset at the top of a bridge I cross everyday, and was showing 99 mpg at the far end.

I'm currently showing 23.2 near the end of a tank of back and forth to work. Computer shows 40 avg MPH. 17 mile commute each way, about half of the way on back roads, some highway, some stoplights.

Filling it will show 21.3 actual on the calculator based on previous fillups.

Worst tank I ever had was 11.9 on corn juice pulling the boat through the hills in PA.

Very interesting posts. Here's a question, why is that when you use the cruise control and your rpm stays right at 2000 that when you take it off cruise control and you travel a few more miles never making the rpm go above 1500, the average mpg goes lower? Must be some crazy formula. Hope that made sense. Thanks for posting all!

Posted this picture a few years ago. This was after resetting the computer and then doing my 50 mile commute home from school. With medium/light traffic, I was doing between 50-60 mph.

Here's a fun thing to do: when going down a long hill, reset the computer and let off the gas. The readout will be 99.9 until you hit the gas again.

It's one of those quirks about the 4Runner, if you haven't discovered it. The MPG computer tends to be 10% optimistic is what most members find. Some a bit higher and some lower.

I use it to gauge my fuel consumption accordingly, not so much as an accurate representation of what my current gas mileage is, just for curiousity purposes only. If it's lower, I'm using more gas and either climbing more grades, headwind or driving a bit more spirited. If it's higher, my credit card will thank me when I get to the pump.

Well, as I mentioned in my first post, this was only highway miles. Non-highway miles are on the opposite end.
