What's your MPG??

You're telling me! This weekend i suppose i am going to change my plugs, clean MAF and maybe seafoam. Holy crap.

You mentioned you drive only 50 miles a month, right? I get awful gas mileage when i do short trips and city driving. But highway driving is much better.

just about, i only drive it once i get home (if i go anywhere) and weekends.

Over 10 fill ups I'm averaging 13.1mpg w/ 265/70/17 Duratracs, no lift. Mostly city driving, but even the best highway tank was only 14.5mpg. Once the weather warms up I'll be changing the diff fluids with synthetic, and I'm sure it could use a new air filter as well. Hoping to get a bit better than this, the best tank so far is worse than the worst tank I got with my Land Cruiser!

My MPG is shit. :)

And I've even been driving it like a grandma trying to make it better.

Was averaging around 15.5 the last couple of months but I quit counting because it was too depressing. My commute is 12.5 miles each way. Mostly highway 85-90% highway. Speed limit is 65mph so I try not to go over 70. Sometimes a little more, usually around 65 (like I said, driving like a grandma). :)

I was getting a little bit better during the summer. Maybe around 16.5 - 17mpg. Unless on a road trip. Going over 70mph in these 4Runners has a big hit on MPG.

I'd love to get 20 MPG. Even 18 would make me happy. I've never got very good mileage in mine.

Spark Plugs changed (Denso Iridiums) at 108k miles. All new fluids - engine oil, all diffs, transfer case. New air filter. New tires recently - stock size. No lift.

Truck seems to run fine, just crappy MPG. Was hoping to use it for more road trips - was expecting the advertised 19mpg, maybe more if I was gentle. Other than creaky seats and stupid 3rd brake light removal process that's my only real grip with this truck.

Even when I first fill it up the range never goes over 350 miles. In reality, I barely get 300 miles to a tank, maybe a little more. Last week I drove to work and had an 1/8th of a tank. Parked it, and when I came back out to drive home I started it and the gauge was at E. The light came on and everything. It lost an 1/8th of a tank just sitting there.

But I do like the V8, so I rationalize. :)

I was getting 20.9 mpg since most of my commute is hwy(hand calculated), and hardly ever push past 60 mph(why rush to get to work?) but for the last month or so, my mpg went right down the toilet bowl, averaging 17. Turns out I had 3 bad brake calipers with leaking fluid and stuck pistons. son of a monkeys uncle.

This spring:
-Clean MAF
-New air filter
-synthetic fluids
-seafoam!
-summer fuel mix(why does the winter mix always blow?)

check tire pressure too, and maybe even over-inflate just a tad. soft tires kill mpg more than just about anything else. oh and air filter?

do you drive like you are 18, or like you are 60? jackrabbit starts and stops makes a BIG difference...I drive like a grandmother on pavement, so I save all that precious fuel for tearin it up in the dirt :becky:

i drive like an old lady, im never in a rush to go anywhere. Once i do a little tune up this weekend and mileage doesnt change, ill check my brakes.

I just get this image in my head of all these badass T4's driving EVERYWHERE at least 10-15 under the speed limit; drivers hands at 10 and 2, hunched forward in their seats, peering over the steering wheel

MPG got worst as it progressed through its life's stages.

Around 20 mpg when it looked like this.

Around 13.5 mpg as it looks today. I recently got 14.8 mpg all highway driving to SoCal on I-5 (75 mph avg.).

Dawg4Runner, I like your transition from stock to what it is now!

My stock 4Runner pretty well averages what Toyota says as long as I drive around the speed limit. My mpg changes when I change anything from stock. I've seen anything from 13 to 21 mpg. Every 5k it is taken in for synthetic oil change and preventative maintenance. Funny thing is that I can pull our 2000 lb popup at 65 mph and get the same gas mileage as driving without it at 85 mph.

I have no idea what my MPG is and I don't care, if that was concern I would have bought a Prius.

I take a lot of road trips to national parks etc.so for my family MPG is a concern. If we're only getting 15 MPG on the highway it's important for us to be aware so we can determine if the 4Runner is the right vehicle.

The 4runner is reliable and comfortable but if we can achieve the same thing but in an Outback or something getting nearly double the MPG than its worth considering.

Not that I'd necessarily ditch the 4Runner but for the wife's (family) car, it would be worth knowing what our MPG costs are so we can have at least one vehicle that doesn't guzzle gas.

That way we have options. The 4Runner for shorter local trips where we might pull a trailer, and a more economical car for longer trips.

We have better things to do with our money than turn it into a nice flammable liquid form and send it out the tailpipe.

For example, we're planning a trip to Sequoia National Park. That's around 2400 miles round trip. I'd be a fool not to consider my fuel costs on a trip like that. Measuring the MPG of my 4Runner allows me to make an informed decision on which vehicle to take. If I just supposed I was getting the advertised 19 mpg I'd have a budget that was wrong.

To suggest people who pay attention to their fuel costs may as well get a Prius is... I don't know, just silly.

I pay attention to all of my costs in life. It allows me to know how my investments are doing, how much I spend on food, housing, entertainment and better plan for retirement and my kids college.

I don't ignore any of my expenses. :)

2004 SR5 V8
135,000 miles
3" suspension lift
275/70 Goodyear MTR's
Yakima Load warrior roof basket

I am averaging 12.6 mpg this winter.

I track mpg for the sole purpose of having a baseline to alert me to any maintenance or performance issues.

There are way too many variables to make it worthwhile trying to compare mpg to other 4runner owners.

I see people getting on the bandwagon with all of the MPG hype and the vehicle they drive, especially withall electric cars now. But, I saw a Chevy truck on top of a Prius the other day. It confirms the extra $200 a month for fuel costs I pay for the safety of my famly!

holy jesus my car must be one in a million then. Or something is seriously wrong.

13.83 the past 3 months. V8 with 265/70/17

I suggest getting your brakes inspected. You might have a frozen caliper, which our rigs are known for. I just did my front and found a frozen one on each side.
