2003 V8 4x4 bone stock with 160ks miles. It was a weekend warrior since I had a take home work car but that work program got suspended in January. So now I am driving the T4R 60 miles a day. Average about 19.2. Not bad for a 10 year old V8 full time 4wd with 160k miles on it. Thats hand calculated the MPG wishometer on the dash reads around 20.5 mpg.

Don't rely solely on the dash read out. Its usually high.

I've been getting 18.5. V6, 30 degree weather, MN, mostly short trips.

Well if that's the case, I got about 14mpg.

16-18 mpg depending on how much highway driving I do... I use a scangauge to track my gas mileage and find it's very accurate to my manual calcs when I fillup.... Dash gauge typically runs about 2mpg higher......

Just finished my first full tank with this thing. 17.06 MPGs! 338 miles on a little over 19 gallons of fuel! I'm ECSTATIC!!! This is the most fuel efficient V8 I've ever owned!! :boxing:

Otherwise known as the 'wish-0-meter', they tend to run about 10% optimistic.

I haven't told my wife, that way I can point to it and say see, I'm getting about 17.9 MPG (in reality it's closer to 16MPG).

I was bummed the first time I took a road trip and it was reading 16.5 (admittedly, going 85mph across KS) I knew I was only getting around 15. Now when I cross KS, if I'm not in a hurry, we'll take HWY 24 just to the north of I70. It's prettier. Adds about an hour/hour and a half but we save a little money and have a more enjoyable trip. Sometimes it's nice to slow done and see the countryside.

My old Jeep Wrangler I6 was getting about 14mpg, so at least the V8 in the 4R was a slight improvement in efficiency. A huge improvement in creature comforts!

I can confirm this as well. The dashboard computer is junk. I keep mine set to show range (distance to empty.) Here's a funny thing: While the MPG estimate is always too high, the DTE/Range is always too low. For example right now my Scangauge shows a DTE of 150 miles while my dashboard computer (the same one that says I'm getting 19.5 MPG) says I only have 120 miles of "range" left (Obviously they engineered the "range" setting to include a healthy "reserve" distance, I guess they didn't want to get complaints from people about running out of gas?)

The only way to really measure MPG is to use the old tried-and-true method of filling the tank then driving, then filling again, preferably at the same station, same pump, same time of day and then dividing the amount of gas needed to fill the tank by the number of miles driven (and if you don't want to do the math yourself, you can use a program like Fuelly | Share and Compare Your MPG to do it for you.)

I've been running a Scangauge II that I transferred over from my previous T4R (99 3rd gen.) Primary purpose for the SG is to monitor transmission fluid temp (TFT) but an added side bonus is that I can monitor both instant and per-tank MPG as well, and unlike the factory computer, the Scangauge can be "reality checked" and calibrated.

FWIW my running average is 17.7 but you have to consider that my 4runner is not my DD. This time of year I only drive the 4runner when there is enough snow or ice on the ground that I need 4wd. Otherwise I drive my car (Mazda Protege.) So, given that most of my 4runner driving is in 4wd at relatively low speeds, or else while pulling a trailer, that tends to skew my MPG low.

In May I'll be taking my first multi-day trip with the 4runner where I am not pulling a 1200lb trailer. It will be interesting to see how the 4runner does MPG wise. In similar trips in 2011 and 2012 with my previous 4runner, my MPG averaged around 19, so I'm anticipating the 4th gen doing even better.

This is a new 4r to me (third one) so hopefully it is *normal*. Some of you seem to be posting a little higher for the v8.. and I drive pretty much like a granny. Note: the previous owner replaced the 17" with the 18" Limited wheels.

Ya, that is not at all surprising about the dashboard readout. Even the MPG "estimates" are more of wishful thinking than anything else. MPG is very subjective, and often highly inaccurate. I've been averaging about 400 miles +\- out of a tank. So around 17 mpg mixed city and highway driving. I'd say it's not to far off.

After replacing my passenger wheel bearing that was starting to develop a hum, my milage has gone up from the 15ish range to the 17.5 ish range.

Every little bit helps.

17 mpg measured over the last 10k miles, high of 21.5 low of 14.xx

About 65/35 split city/hwy

On board readout was typically 1.8 mpg high although 1-2x it was accurate.

Well, changing my plugs helped more dramatically than i expected. While i know the DIC is about 2MPG off. Before my plug change i was 15MPG (13.2 actual MPG).
