Wheel Bearing Diag- Video

Hey Everyone,
Hoping someone with experience can tell if I have a bad bearing by the sound.

I pulled my PS wheel bearing to try to diagnose the noise I'm getting.
Its a whine/drone that increases with speed and goes away if you yank wheel to driver.
There is no noticeable play pulling at 6 an 12 or 3 and 9.
Feels really tight. Cant feel any play on or off the truck. But there is noise.

Here is the bearing on the truck. Sounds like something is vibrating up into the backing plate



Here is the bearing off the vehicle. The bolts are taped to reduce clatter.

Sounds like a bad bearing to me.

[MENTION=105683]davidaw[/MENTION], Your description of the sound while driving is enough for me to say that you probably have a bad wheel bearing. The video is confirmation. There is a guy, here on T4R.org that sells bolt on wheel bearing/hub assemblies for 4th gen front wheels for $169.00:

Mine sounded just like that on passenger side and even worse on the drivers side - replaced both bearing/hub assemblies this weekend. I would recommend getting new inner seals and replacing those at the same time. Here is the site I ordered from, he is also on the forum too and can help out if needed - his name is Bill.

If it feels as gritty as it sounds replace it. You should replace both sides at the same time. Just curious, did you put it back together? That was an awful lot of work to not just replace it when you had it apart. I probably would have replaced it even if it was good after doing the work.

Sungod: Yeah I pulled it twice. No big deal. This thing is cake compared to my FJ60 bearings. Didnt even get greasy.

fishtizzy: Thanks for the link. I only did the problem one, but will certainly go this route again. Too simple not to. Looks like all the options are around $170.

So I too have a bad bearing on my front drivers side 2007 4x4. I asked NJ636 about ordering one of his replacement assemblies last night.

My question is actually about the old, crappy bearing assembly and how much time you all think I might have left in it before it comes flying off the vehicle. I have to drive about 300 miles on the freeway for work later this week and I'm really nervous about it. I just lifted the truck front end up at work with my forklift and gave the wheel a good yank back and forth to see how much play is in it, and it's about 5 or 6 millimeters of play I would say. Rocking it from the top and bottom of the wheel.

Do you guys think I will be ok to drive it for my trip before I can get it fixed or is it simply too stupid to even think about given the amount of play? I've never had a bearing go bad on me on any vehicle so I really have no idea how likely it is that shit will hit the fan under the circumstances.

I'd definitely park it.. Not worth taking that chance.. :faint:
