Wheel offset

I am planning to put a 2.5'' suspension lift on my 07 4runner as well as get new wheels and larger tires. However the only issue im running into is what the correct offset would be for new wheels. Im not sure what it currently is with the stock rims and Toyota is of no help.

What would be the correct offset or is there a range that I should stay in? I am planning on going from 265/65R17 to 285/70R17.

OK, so you are doing a 2.5" suspension lift, with 285's. I am assuming that you using 17" rims, right? First a question: Why not go a full 3"? I would keep your offset no smaller than -12mm (the smaller the offset #, the further the rim sticks out of the wheel well). I mean, even at -12mm, you're still going to have to do some trimming and even the body mount chop. If I remember correctly, OEM 4th gen 17" wheel offset is +30mm, so keep that in mind. Good luck!

Backspacing is easier for me to understand. Stock wheels are 5'' bacspacing. I think 4.5'' of backspacing is the closest to the UCA you can go with an aggressive 285. 4.5'' backspacing also is the best for the least trimming. They dont stick out a whole lot though. See my picture below.

I run a 2.5 inch daystar lift (for now), with 16x7 wheels, 4.5 inch backspacing, and only rubbed the front liner with my 285s. Cut that out and you're good.

Thanks for the information. Reason I chose 2.5'' instead of 3'' is I read in a few places and some people have run into issues with 3'' caused by extra strain from the lift. However I was looking at getting the Toytec lift.

I don't want to do a lot of trimming so I will stick with which ever will either prevent me from having to do any or as little as possible.

I went through the same process over the last couple of months trying to figure out the backspacing and offset on my factory wheels vs. TRD wheels vs. aftermarket, etc. I didn't have much luck finding the specs but ended up going with a set of Stealth 6's from Stealth Custom Series. The specs are listed on their site but to be honest, I just looked at pics of other members who are running those wheels and they look perfect to me. Vin is a member here so feel free to reach out and ask him questions. What I like about SCS is that they are specifically designed for our trucks (hub centric vs lug centric) and the offset looks to be just what I'm looking for. Aggressive but without sticking out past the fender flares. I'll post pics once I get them mounted with new tires.

i was in the same boat you are now. i was trolling like crazy around the web looking for answers. i finally came to the conclusion that the 2.5f spacer wasn't what i was looking for. i waited a little longer and got the 5100's set to the second notch with toytec 2.5 springs. so all n all i got around 3.5 inch and i went with a 255/80 17 on method mesh 0 offset with 4.5 back space. i had to remove the mud flaps up front and had to push my fender liner forward. so with that said i dont think that 2.5 with cut it with a 285/80 17 with out doing cutting pushing.

i have the toytec lift on my rig and with my 17x9 -12 offset (or thats what they are stamped at) XD addicts also with a 1.25in Spidertrax spacer my 285/70/17 trail grapplers still rub. i have the fender liners pushed forward, bumper cut and minor trimming.

I plan on doing the mount cut and maybe if so a 1in body lift to help.

So please forgive my lack of knowledge as I am new to the world of modifications. And I appreciate all of the input.

It seems like 285's will cause the need for trimming in general so would going down to 275's be a better option and subsequently eliminate the need for trimming? Or another thought I had for later down to road would be to get a new front bumper all together. So would changing the bumper at the same time simultaneously remove the need for trimming or would that still depend on the offset/backspacing?

depending on the bumper yeah you could eliminate trimming as some just get rid of the fender liners and dont come down as far as oem

What would you recommend as far as a bumper?

Also would there need to be any trimming in the rear?

It also depends on the second number on the tire. The first number is the width, the second number is the amount of profile compared to the width. Tire size also changes based on the wheel size, such as 17" or 18".

For example, a 285/70 is taller than a 285/60. Here is a small chart for comparison:

285/70/17 = 32.71 inches in diameter
275/70/17 = 32.16 inches in diameter
285/60/17 = 30.46 inches in diameter

-now compare the 17 to the 18 inch wheel
285/60/18 = 31.46 inches in diameter

Basically, when comparing what will fit or not fit, you have to look at all the numbers. Then compare that to the offset of the wheel and how it will sit inside the wheel well. The easiest thing to do is look and read at what others have done and ask if they had to cut/slice/remove parts or move parts.

Also, when speaking of wheels, you have to figure both the offset and the backspacing. And these too change with the width of the wheel. You can't compare a 8.5 inch wheel to a 7.5 wheel as far as offset and backspacing go because the numbers change with the width of the wheel.

So does anyone know what's the offset on the stock wheels? I think I've seen somewhere that it is +30mm (duh, it's mentioned above), so I figure that if i get wheels (8" wide) with 0mm offset, that should be almost like getting 1.25" spacers. But offset may not be exactly 1:1 ratio to the way back spacing would move outward. I want to get 17x8 wheels and put 285/70R17 on them, I am aware of the rubbing issue on fenders and body mounts, but I am trying to figure out what offset I need to clear the upper control arms. Anyone can provide specific feedback on that?
Since I am getting new wheels, would like not to be getting spacers on top of that.

Thank you

After doing more digging, came across this website (mentioned by one of the members on this forum) Custom rims, wheel tire packages. Given that the back spacing should be no more than 4.5" on 285s (based on various mentions), looks like the 17x8 0mm offset with 285s on it would clear the UCA.

Hey, I have a similar question. I'll be running 35x12.50R17 tires on 17" beadlock wheels. Two questions:

1) Width: The wheels I am looking at come in 17x8.5" and 17x9.5" Which will work best?
2) Offset: What is recommended?
3) Backspacing: What is recommended?

Note that I'll be using a long travel system up front (possibly the 4.5" XLT kit from Solo Motorsports with 9" diff and RCVs) and 9" diamond axles in the rear. This vehicle will be setup for rock crawling and desert racing.

Any recommendations? I won't be locked in - just need starting specs for pricing.

1) 9.5" wide wheel
2) negative offset or else you will need wheel spacers to prevent rubbing (also to clear the tire away from UCA and strut )
3) I would assuming less than 4" because I have a 31.9" tire and I need backspacing of 4.5-5" (-10mm to 0mm offset on a 9" wide wheel)

Thank you! I sent these over this morning. I haven't gotten much feedback on this need so your response was a life saver!

Im glad I can help.

Also worst case that may happen, is you may need to do some light trimming on your bumper and heat gun press on the fender liner and also probably removal of mud flaps.

What didn' I do?

Whats up sqaud? So I know this subject is beaten to death but I need help with a rubbing issue I have on my '09 Sport. Put a 2" Bilstein 5100 lift on with Wildpeak 275/70R17's. The tires are rubbing my UCA's like crazy and I don't know what to do to make it stop. So far from what I've gathered, I need wheels with a 0 or negative offset. Right now I'm looking to pull the trigger on some Black Rhino Baker's that have a -12 offset. I can picture the tire sticking out and I think I like that aggressive look but also hope that the $1000 I spend on them will fix my rubbing problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

-12 should be more than enough to fix the issue, plus it gives a great stance as you mentioned. I will say though that black rhino wheels are heavy as sh*t. If you care about your unsprung weight, then I would checkout other options.

Hey I'm in the exact same situation! Did you go with this setup? I added tacoma wheels on to my 4th gen hilux surf. major rubbing on the UCA's. 275/70/17 K02s and 2.5" dobinson lift. I just got some spacers I could put on.... but maybe I should just buy some cheap steelies and return the spacers and sell the tacoma wheels. Any thoughts? the taco wheels are +30mm. video here for insight.
