Wheel painting

Ok,so I know I do a major upgrade on something monthly (sorry KidV), but I am looking to kill some time and not spend a fortune (money really has to go to suspension next week). So I am thinking about painting my good ole SR5 rims. Any reccomendations on paint, methods or color? Needs to match the Rustoleum Hammered I used on the bumper and doors.

If not paint, is there really anything I can do to bring the SR5 rims back to life? Trying to keep this cheap so powder coating or professional paint is not an option right now.

New black rims will come with 33" tires later down the road.

sand blast them then have them powder coated best money you could ever spend.

I painted mine. I just sanded them down using a spongy pad of 220 grit, self etching primer and rustoleum charcoal metallic gray. As long as you sand the metal and use a self etching primer, you can use just about any spray paint for primed metal. Total cost was about $10.

Sorry BV, but for an offroad wheel that is expected to get trashed I would say that paint is way better than powder coating. It's cheap and easy to touch up. Even powder coating doesn't stand a chance against a rock when a thousand pounds of pressure is jammed up against it.

had it happen 2 times and yes it will break just like paint, but there is no equal when they are clean and shiny but how often does that happen lol
powder coat only cost me 40 for the hole set but i get deals so.

Sand 'em down, stick a ring of playing cards around the rim to keep the paint off your tires, and go to town with a rattlecan. I used an etching primer and then rustoleum hammered on my sliders, it turned out pretty good. The guy I got my rims from painted them with NAPA Chassis Black, and they look very decent as well, black and shiny.

I plasti dipped my sr5 rims...they look great IMO. Fine grit sand, prime, then apply coats of the dip. I started light with the coats.

I agree with Foot; your dipped wheels look AWESOME! Makes me want to go out and finally paint mine. Though I'm thinking of going with white rims or an off white colour; like the old 40 series landcruisers.

Gets me to thinking. I have about 3/4 of a gallon of bedliner (smooth) -
with the right prep that would look great on my rims, and touch-ups would be as simple as a brush stroke!

i just scotch brite my wheels and used only a few cans. no primer. everything that seen them inperson is amazed how good they look. plus touch up is much easier.
i have always spray paint when sunny and hot out. i let the wheels warm up in the sun before painting. if you want a glossier smoother look. spray heavy on the last coat. than i leave them outside for atleast two days before use

I just painted mine with good ol flat black krylon. Heck, I am decent with a spray can so I didn't even mask off my tires.....the paint is flat black after all. They look nice and only took 1 1/2 cans and about a half hour.
I figure, the time I spend having fun in my 4runner, the easy-fix Krylon was the way to go, but my rig is not nearly as nice as many of the rigs I see here.

i just did mine at home, took about a day, used the index card trick, 320 grit sand paper, some self etching primer and a duplicolor rim paint. im really happy with the outcome, it's a flat black.
