Wheel spacers and safety?

If installing aftermarket wheel adapters (spacers, whatever) like the SpiderTrax units are inherently unsafe, then we'd all better get rid of those aftermarket rims, bigger tires, shocks, springs, lift kits, exhaust...

Point is, use quality parts and install them correctly.

This is a pretty stern statement but nothing to back it up. Perhaps if you really do know a few folks that died from them then back it up with some true facts. I would be more than happy to hear about it other then your general statement.

I used a bit of hyperbole in my statement, but consider this from the first page of google results:

A Ware County woman died Tuesday when she was thrown from a pickup truck that overturned after a wheel fell off the vehicle on a Waycross street, authorities said.

Patty Johnson, 54, of Millwood, was a passenger along with her sister, Tina Bordine, 46, in a truck driven by Richard Allen Bordine, 37, said Capt. Chris Tatum of the Waycross Police Department.

The Bordines are married and also live in Millwood, Tatum said.

All three were wearing safety belts. Johnson died after being thrown out an open passenger window as the 1996 Toyota Tacoma pickup overturned trapping her beneath the vehicle, he said.

The Bordines weren't injured in the crash at 3:52 p.m. in the 300 block of Lee Avenue near the public library, Tatum said.

Johnson had been sitting in the right front passenger seat closest to the door. Tina Bordine was sitting in the middle of the front seat between her husband, who was driving, and Johnson, Tatum said.
...

The whole right front wheel separated from the pickup truck, which had oversized tires, and fell off as the family was traveling south on Lee Avenue, the investigation showed.

"It appears the wheel fell off due to worn mechanical parts. It looks like mechanical failure," Tatum said.

Without the wheel, the pickup tilted over to the right, causing the remaining bare metal wheel assembly to gouge into the pavement. That caused the pickup to overturn, the investigation showed.

Police are following up to determine if any other factors contributed to the wheel assembly failing, but no charges are expected in the case, Tatum said.

i was taking a u-turn tonight and i heard a loud pop and i stopped and i was hoping down the road but didnt see anything since i didnt have enough light to notice in the dark,so i went home only 3miles away,i got my flash light and saw that 3 of my lug nuts were sheared of my right front adapter

EDIT: ^ that is a NOT A SpiderTrax spacer. I read a post in the thread about a spidertrax from "peep" and incorrectly attributed it to the OP.

So if an Adapter / Spacer can break or shear lug nuts and risk a wheel falling off, and a wheel falling off can equal death to that of you or your family, then considering the OPs question:

Are wheel spacers safe? I've got young kids and just wondering and trying to be a good dad.

I'm going to stand by my "no" on this one. Everyone in this thread can tell themselves whatever they want about how it has never happened to them, but I don't want to put my kid's life (or mine if they aren't with me) at risk because I was too cheap to buy wheels and I wanted to look cool by spacing my wheels out.

"If properly installed" yeah, everyone here is going to loctite and torque their spacers every time they have a wheel off. Yeaaaaah. Most people don't even care enough to hand torque their wheels. I do.

"If correct for your vehicle" ok, parts guys never make a mistake? OWNERS never make a mistake?

Good luck using those arguments to reattach a limb or unkill someone.

FWIW, I gained .5" of offset and .5" of width by going to FJ wheels. Bonus? They are hubcentric. Bonus bonus? They were less than $300 for 5, with tires.

The OP has to decide whether the risk is worth taking.
The rest of us just have to hope that a wheel doesn't fall off with us around.

^ that is a spidertrax 1.25 btw.

NOWHERE in that thread does the OP say it was a SpiderTrax adapter that broke. In fact, the OP specifically states that his adapters "were on the cheaper side" when asked if they were quality units. That makes two different threads from two different forums that you've incorrectly cited to further your "the sky is falling" argument.

The Ware County story - where is the mention of a wheel spacer failing? There isn't one, so it's a useless story for purposes of this discussion.

As to the rest of your arguments, get real. You're going to blame a part because the owner was "too lazy" to install it correctly??? If the adapter requires a particular torque spec and loc tite and you don't do either and the part fails, whose fault is it? Let me guess - SpiderTrax, right?

Let us know when you find verifiable proof of a SpiderTrax adapter failing on a 4Runner that was properly installed.

Yep you're right. I read that incorrectly as coming from the OP. My b man, my b.

Have you never made a mistake?

Besides, I already told you that the 4Runner guys who lost a spacer are all dead.

No worries, man. I see this all the time on the other forums - a pack mentality when there's a question like this. And for the record, I've got a set of SpiderTrax waiting to go on my truck right now. If I see real proof that these things aren't safe, I'll be the first to send them back. Maybe a good excuse to get a set of FJ rims, right?

Spidertrax Spacer Failures - JeepForum.com
had them installed at a very reputable 4x4 shop.....used the proper torque and lock tite stuff.......after about a year of running them with no problems one of my buddies noticed my back wheel wobbling....got home jacked the jeep up and found that when i took my wheel off that 3 of the 5 bolts from my hub had sheard off b/c of the spacer....spydertrax...bought brand new....it wasnt obvious from just looking at the wheel b/c the spacer bolts were fine and my lugs were tight to them on the wheel.....so from the outside it looked fine......i will never run them again fwiw
i had a failure on one of my wheel...in my opinion the only reason it failed was because the nuts holding the spacer onto the hub backed off enough to allow spacer room to spin. This eventually lead to the spacer breaking off 2 of my lug bolts on the axle. I think if you go back a month or two after they are installed and make sure they are all tight then there wont be a problem.

And one the proponents will come back with:
Still no pics of actual Spidertrax failures...
:fear:

Keep that torque checked and all will be well...

Probably.

Yeah, I get it, honestly. But if one can make a mistake on a forum, or at work, or at home, or inside Food Lion... they can make a mistake in the garage. One extra point of failure could be the difference, and again, blaming the install, the weather, the tire shop, whatever is not going to put little Jimmy's arm back on, is it? (seriously, it won't will it?)

For me personally, I weighed the pros and cons of these myself but ultimately decided I wasn't comfortable.

Ever read the plastidip threads where they say to put the bottle in hot water to improve the flow? Well I took it one step further and stuck a can on my dashboard in the sun while I taped off the grille. It got warm, and I thought nothing of it, until I shook it up about 100 times and it popped the pressure relief on the bottom of the can. I almost shat, but I went ahead and used it (didn't shake it anymore though).

Afterwards, I was thinking back on it, and if that can had exploded and shot a shard of metal through my wrist, that wouldn't be very good for me or my family.

People do stupid shit all the time, and mistakes are made. I don't want to chance it, I got enough crap to worry about already. I make sure my 24 lug nuts are torqued, lowered, torqued, driven, and torqued. That is enough work for me, especially after spending hours working on it after the fatigue has set in.

I get it now, funny guy I see? All good, just if there are some proven causes that go beyond human error I would like to know about it. I run them but have been really considering changing rims to eliminate them.

There you go OP. 4runner geniuses trust wheel spacers, and these two guys ran them for 100 miles per day, or 1.5 years without a problem.

Go ahead and trust your kids safety to spacers because these guys haven't had any problems.

I tried to get some people to post that have had spacer failures at 80mph, but they were all dead. Sorry.

find me an example of someone that died because of spidertrax coming off when they were torqued to spec with loctite applied, and when they were consistently checked every tire rotation (5k). you find me that and ill go out and take them off in the dark right now.

So you remove them every 5k with loctite on them, clean them up, and the reapply loctite and retorque them?

Well you got me there. I am now convinced they are safer than seatbelts and airbags. I can't wait for spacers to be federally mandated on all vehicles. I'll be watching the auto news for the announcement, but in the meantime I've ordered 8. Two for each wheel. Thanks!

No. I re-torque to spec every 5k to be sure, not remove them

Act like an adult, were just sharing experiences, nobody has a gun to your head telling you to put wheel spacers on. Grow up

I would be very shocked that anyone actually takes the time to remove and re-torque.

My biggest concern for my own and families safety would be financial. You can be 100% sure your insurance will deny any and all claims if you have an accident since they are not DOT approved. That also means denial of representation if your wheel flies off and lands in someone's car and kills them. Those ambulance chasing attorneys sue you, not your insurance company. If your insurance company denies your claim, you are on your own. No representation and no insurance policy to pay the ambulance chaser. You are 100% on the hook at that point.

I am sure many run these and do so without incident, but I wouldn't want to be the one that has the problem.

i doubt the majority of the people who have them have ever checked them since they installed them, or had a shop install them

I agree. That is what protects a company like spidertrax from liability (or so they probably think). Where you to have a problem with them, they will first say that they are labeled for off road use, and then will ask you to prove that you followed their usage requirements. You notice the pictures on their website are of off road vehicles.

I'm kinda new here and I came here looking for advice. This page seems to have turned into a pissing contest of sorts?
I made a new thread about my concerns with how much shorter the spidertrax lugs for remounting the wheel are. I went from 13 to 8.5mm and I really concerned that there is not enough thread left to safely keep the wheel torqued down.

As a guy who has had a spacer break while driving and have a wheel fly off, i'll say that they are safe.

If you get spidertrax, allpro, or any other hubcentric spacer/adaptor that isnt a $50 ebay lugcentric piece of crap you will be fine. just torque them to the appropriate specs and and use loctite for good measure.
I've had spidertrax for 2 years and never had a problem until i wanted to go wider.
ended up going with a 1.5" ebay spacer and had one fail on me within about 2 months.

You get what you pay for, and with spidertrax, you wont strip a lug, have one snap off, or come loose while driving. Just stay away from generic chinese ebay ones, and you will be fine.

I have allpro 1.5 hub centric spacers. Zero issues. Been on for a year and a half. The stance on these trucks stock isn't very good. I'd think adding 3inches to your stance would lower your center of gravity. Track better. Handle better. Especially if you lift it. Makes it even more top heavy with a lift from behind they look like they will tip over w a stock stance.
