Wheel Torq

Hey All

So I bought a new torq wrench kit made by company named Maximum. So I am looking up what torq setting I need for my wheels and it says aluminum wheels is 76 and steel wheels is 83.

The problem is that the settings on the wrench have even numbers only. So I can set it at 82 and it snaps into place but at 83 I can't lock the wrench at that setting.

So do I set it at 82 and torq it and it's fine or is the 4runner manual wrong?

Anyone can shed some light on this? What am I missing?

1lb-ft isn't going to cause a problem. Get as close as possible and roll with it. Your wrench probably isn't calibrated anyway, so it's not going to be exact to begin with.

Higher end torque wrenches will go in increments of 0.5-1 lb-ft, digital ones can read out in tenths.

Dang. Was hoping it would not be a product limitation. There is actually a certificate of calibration in the kit and the tool is not a cheap one although did get it on sale. I guess I could still go with 82 as the safer route then going to 84 but still sucks for what seems a higher end wrench.

Anyone know if getting the Dewalt wrench will include .5 or 1 lb-ft increments, so I don't have to buy and return again? Mind you more money. Is it worth $100+ more to get it or as you mention close is good enough and don't get too sticky about it?

You're over-thinking it, "nuking it out" as we said in the Navy. Set it for either 82 or 84 and do it, 1lb-ft in either direction isn't going to hurt anything. The world isn't going to explode, you're not going to cause damage, nothing is going to fall apart, so just relax.

Years back, a buddy had a brand new Snap On (pretty expensive) that he'd used to build a few engines already...it was out of cal by almost 10% and had to be adjusted (we had a mobile guy come by every 6 months to calibrate).

Roger that. Yes I do tend to be a stickler for details at times, especially my 4Runner :)

But now you raise an interesting point about calibration. How can I know if the calibration is off and where can someone bring such a tool to get it tuned? Can I just go to any mechanic garage guy and they can do it? Or am I over thinking again and shouldn't even bother or worry about it.

I've got/had my torque wrench set at about 85 for several years and wheels have been off/on at least a dozen times and haven't lost one yet! Like was said don't overthink, get it as close as you can and you'll be fine.
 
Yes, you're over-thinking it again... way too much. The small percentage that it may be off at the lower torque levels you're using, is really not going to matter. Even if it were off by 10%, most systems are engineered to regularly handle 115% of rated and are usually spec'd to 150% of rated. You could actually torque your lug nuts to 100lb-ft and probably never see any adverse effects. Think of how many people just go as tight as they can in lugs, if it was that critical you'd see cars down all over the place. You're also not providing work that could be called back for warranty repairs... the biggest reason shop torque wrenches are calibrated often.

For regular intermittent use, it's not cost effective for you to have it done. Mechanic shops don't have the equipment, but there are tool vendors (Proto, Snap On, etc) that either provide the service or have a local provider. They have specialized equipment to verify torque and make adjustments.

When I worked in a shop (granted, I'm large industrial, mostly engine building), the tool guy came around once a month trying to sell tools. He would collect stuff to be checked/repaired/calibrated and would usually return them the next week. Offshore (oil & gas platform in the Gulf of Mexico) we have multiple sets and send them in on rotation (we have them in in-lb all the way to up over 1000lb-ft).
