Wheels, Tires, Level 2011 Limited

Hey Guys,

Looking for a little guidance. I'm coming from a Subaru WRX so the truck talk is new to me. The forum is great and learning lots so far. I'm hoping that you can offer some guidance/reassurance that my proposed mods will work/good decision.

1st Mod. Like most, I hate the skinny stock tires on the limited (2011 White Limited). I've decided to purchase the XD Hoss Wheels (Gloss Black/Crome center cap) in a 20x9, -12 Offset (4.5 Backspacing) and will likely add the Michelin LTX M/S2 in 275/55-20 as the vehicle is mostly used on road. That said, I'm also considering the Nitto Terra Grapplers but worried that the tread pattern may be too aggressive to fit properly, plus might be too loud on the highway for my wife.

2nd Mod. Based on most of the talk on the forum, it sounds like I'll definitely need some lift in the front to run the wider tires. I'm considering the Toytec, Daystar 2.5/1.5" levelling kit. A local shop also suggested the ProComp 3/2.

Questions:

- Should I be able to eliminate tire rub by completing the fender mod, levelling kit, & proper alignment?

- will either of those tires work? Stats look very close from a measurement perspective and the grapplers dont look like they have an overly agressive lug.

- Am I looking at good options for the levelling kit? Any other suggestions? i'm not interested in a new coil-over setup at this point.

- Can I achieve the proper alignment without adding UCA's? I see many using the Light Racing setup. Is this a must or can the tech manage the alignment without the new UCA's?

- anything specific that I should be asking the alignment tech to do? I've come across several posts suggesting that camber? or caster? should be +4...

- Are many of you running into issues with the stock cam bolts/bushings? My local shop says they've run into challenges with the OEMs, even on vehicles with less than 20K miles.

- I'll be running the stock rims in the winter with OEM size Blizzaks. Any issues alignment wise swapping the narrower tire back on for the winter? WIll I need to do a new alignment each time?

What else am I missing?

Thanks

BFG A/T is a decent compromise between on road/off road tread.

I went with BFG A/T 275/70/17's, on a Toytec 2.5"/1.5" leveling kit on my 13 TE. The Toytec kit uses a billet aluminum spacer in front, which will never compress like other composite spacers.

Stifler and Philsey - why waste my time and yours with a response like that?

They are not wasting your time; they are trying to educate you since this is a topic that has been discussed several time already. For sake of the forum it is also in the best interest to keep knowledge consolidated instead of rehashed over and over.

Now as far as your tire selection goes, I'm running Cooper Discoverer ATP's which are fairly aggressive and my wife did not notice a difference from stock (and her opinion is the only one that matters at the end of the day --> happy wive=happy life). If noise is a concern, but you want an AT tire regardless, you may want to consider adding some Dynamat or similar sound deadening product.

Questions:

- Should I be able to eliminate tire rub by completing the fender mod, levelling kit, & proper alignment? A 275/55/20 tire is only a 31.9" diameter compared to stock 31.6" so I don't think you'll have much rubbing at all ,lifted or not. Now a 9 inch wide rim with 4.5"BS will throw the arc of the turning wheel outward an inch or so you might have some in the back outboard side ,just like adding wheel spacers tends to do. Your inside wheel wells are not straight across and are curved . The center of that curve is made to match up with the stock wheel arc when it turns . Move that turning arc out and you can see why it would have a better chance to to hit on the outside back of the wheel well.

- will either of those tires work? Stats look very close from a measurement perspective and the grapplers dont look like they have an overly agressive lug. No way for me to tell without comparing mounted up but a tire with a more aggressive outer lug will obviously have a greater chance to rub and be noisier.A tire the same size from one manufacturer isn't necessarily the EXACT same size as one from another as they have tolerances so unless you compare the two yourself or know someone who has ,there's not an real answer but probably yes.

- Am I looking at good options for the levelling kit? Any other suggestions? i'm not interested in a new coil-over setup at this point. Unless you get a spacer lift that goes on top of the CO and has it's own studs or stud extenders then you have to take the shock out to compress the spring to get the spacer in and change the studs. Not many shops know how or want to take the risk of disconnecting the XREAS shocks to do that so ones like the Daystar's make it easier.

- Can I achieve the proper alignment without adding UCA's? I see many using the Light Racing setup. Is this a must or can the tech manage the alignment without the new UCA's? With stock UCA's and a 2 1/2" front lift the alignment will barely if at all reach the minimum +2.2 caster setting and still maintain proper camber. What this means is the steering will be lighter which leads to more wander on the the highway and also the wheel will be a little further back in the wheel well where it could rub in the back. Some people the lighter steering doesn't bother them and say they like it........not me.I personally like more caster in my 5th and can take my hands off the wheel and it will stay straight as arrow,no wandering, til I turn it and makes it a joy to drive on the highway IMO. The higher caster setting can ONLY be achieved with a lift and aftermarket UCA's and somebody who knows how to set them.

- anything specific that I should be asking the alignment tech to do? I've come across several posts suggesting that camber? or caster? should be +4.... They'll never get close to +4 caster with a lift and stock UCA and will have to work to get it even close to minimum.

- Are many of you running into issues with the stock cam bolts/bushings? My local shop says they've run into challenges with the OEMs, even on vehicles with less than 20K miles.Never heard of this and even aligned mine the best I could and got pretty close at home in my garage when I first put my lift on and it's simple if they know what they are doing. Front and rear eccentric cam bolts on the lower control arms adjust camber and caster. Take it to another shop that has aligned a Toyota truck then if they are "challenged" by it as it's been the same for years.

- I'll be running the stock rims in the winter with OEM size Blizzaks. Any issues alignment wise swapping the narrower tire back on for the winter? WIll I need to do a new alignment each time?
No problems as the tires you chose are practically the same diameter.

What else am I missing? Pictures of your new truck???

Thanks

Hope that helps some and all this has been written before. Hard to really compare one set up to another unless you have someone that has actually done it with the EXACT same set up.

as stated, it was to educate you.... but I could be whiney too and ask why would you waste our time with a question like that:evil:

Or...... if your such a educated search specialist you could have easily gave him links with the answers since he's new to the forum and the fragmented answers are scattered over 3 1/2 years and would be hard for even me search when I know they are there.

But then you wouldn't have such a high post count with 90% total uneducated BS post and wouldn't live up to your Stifler persona.lol

harper7 - thank you very much for the detailed response. It's greatly appreciated. To be honest, I'm a little overwhelmed with all the options out there and I'm just trying to ensure I do things right the first time. Pictures to come hopefully sooner than later; as soon as the lift/tires get sorted out!
