When "911" Doesn't Always Come In Time

Yep, your stats are more updated than I what I pulled from an 'I'm feeling lucky' search. But they were completely different stats to mine.
Read all of this this article. Sheriff: 4-Year-Old Shot In Head While Fishing - News Story - WPXI Pittsburgh
This kind of thing sickens me. Especially the ones where the guns are left lying around the house for little kids to play with. These parents should never have been allowed to own firearms because they are too dumb to own them. But the laws don't care about the innocent victims, just some ancient 1791 document written in a very different social climate and circumstance.

Alcohol was involved too in that article...should we bring back prohibition?

Really? I am at a lost for words with what you wrote.... :redbrick: Typical gun control nonsense. I would suggest that you do more research into this.

Maybe you miss this tidbit from above: "Remarkably, guns are used for self-defense more than 2 million times a year, three to five times the estimated number of violent crimes committed with guns." Look at how many innocent "victims" that were saved....

You can post as much 'pro-gun propoganda' as you want, it won't change my views on the topic (and I know I won't change yours). I've lived in countries with very different firearm laws and have real life knowledge of how they impact society. And although I like guns and have owned many myself, given the choice I prefer living in a place with firm (not necessarily strict) controls in place.

'Illegal' firearms were all legal at some point in time.

What countries have you lived in?? I want to do more research on those places.

And what guns have you owned? So, at one point, you did participate in the killing of innocent children? :(

WTF? That article talks about 3 kids being shot and killed and all you care about is the alcohol factor in one of them????? What kind of a parent are you?

I've lived in Australia and the UK.
I've owned 3 Ruger 10/22's, a Ruger Model 96, A Husquvarna 308 Sporter and a Lee Enfield 303.

Your last question makes no sense at all. Calm down Thai, I'm in a good mood and trying to have a friendly discussion here.

Remind me...what does that have to do with my parenting skills??? What kind of idiocy would make you write that?

The article talks mainly about that one incident. It mentions about the other incidents, but did not give much details surrounding those incidents. Thus, my point was in relation to THE MAIN topic of that article.

I was in a pretty good mood until you wrote about above about me being a parent. Dumb.

BTW, what does dumb parents have to do with gun laws?? Are there not dumb drivers?? Dumb construction workers?? So, we should limit the rights of everyone because of the few that do stupid things? And do you really think that more laws or stricter laws will keep the guns off the streets...away from rapists, robbers, etc.??

As a parent I would expect you to comment about the deadly irresponsibility of the parents involved in the cases where the kids were killed in their home. I hoped you would see that firmer gun ownership laws and requirements would make positive steps towards reducing the number of irresponsible people owning firearms. These children died because the owners of the firearms used them irresponsibly. The alcohol was cited as a contributing factor in the other case, but it was the bullet from the gun that killed the kid on the pier. As a parent I hope that you would like to feel that children are safer in society because dipsh!ts like the drunk dude who fired the shot are less likely to own a gun and/or less likely to use it in that manner. Laws and enforcement may have reduced the likelihood of it happening.
I apologize for being insulting. I just don't understand how you see things.

Drivers and construction workers doing dumb things is completely unrelated to this discussion. They are not controlled by gun laws.

And yes, I do think stricter laws will help keep guns of the street, however in the US with the amount of guns already available, new laws would take many years to start yielding positive results.

I did what you did Techno...and did a Google lucky search and found this: America, don’t repeat Australia’s gun control mistake | The Daily Caller

Written by Australian writer...pretty up to date too.
Interesting. I lived in Melbourne for 31 years. The writer only came up with one flimsy 'argument', stating that in a 12 year period, 36 criminals were killed. 12 years!! Imagine what that figure would be for a comparable US city (Philadelphia perhaps?), easily in the hundreds if not thousands I would imagine.
That article was pathetic and in no way showed how Australian gun control has been a mistake.

I accept your apology.

The discussion in this thread is more about the video that i posted initially about home invasion of a women. That is all. You decided to inject outdated statistics into this thread...about gun control. Why? To make a political point when no one is asking??

BTW, a guy who is drunk one night (as terrible night as it was) could very be a good standing productive citizen the other days. How can a law prevent a guy's deadly misjudgement on that one night?? The guy could have used the gun for hunting (which even the strictest laws in Australia apparently allows). The article did not mention his criminal background. (I am sure that if he had any background, then the article would have mentioned it.) So, why don't you propose to all us a gun law that somehow could have prevented this deadly tragedy?? Techno, you have not done anything stupid in your life??

Don't get me wrong, this parent needs to go to jail and get punished to the extent of the law. My guess is that the worst punishment was already handed to him even before he step in front of a judge. As a father of two, there is no doubt in my mind that losing a child (esp. due to your own action) is the worst punishment you can ever do to a parent.

You can't make a law that restricts everyone on the action of a few stupid folks. There are always stupid people in the world, with or without gun laws.

For me, i care about my family and i will do everything on my end to protect them. Sure, if gun manufacturers stop making guns and the world is in perfect harmony, i am all on your bandwagon. But, until that day, i will be armed...and will fight for my rights to own firearms. Unlike you who goes all bonkers over the story, i look at the bigger picture. I learn from the story. I don't go immediately into the deep end and cry foul. [Somehow, you remind me of the dramatic William Shatner..."Oh my goodness, the innocent children...how can we do this to them?" in front of the Klingon counsel.] So, no, i don't see your viewpoints at all...and somehow that makes me a bad parent in your eyes. If so, then so be it. My wife and kids think that i am a great parent!

Sorry, didn't know I needed an invite to post in an off-topic thread. My post was directly related to the video. The video is a pro-gun promotion. It is anti gun control. It was not a documentary. No one asked you to post up some video pushing your political views either, but you did because you can. Same with me. Statistics are not outdated when they refer to a specific time (1997), but they can be when used without one.

You have a history of rambling on about your love of firearms, you even have a gun in your avatar. I kind of get a kick out of stirring you up. You (and others) definitely took the bait this time. Thanks for the lively discussion! :D

The video is about a real life 911 call. Of course, for sensitive folks like yourself, it is like getting your panties twisted in a knot!

Oh yeah, OMG, me having an avatar of my new gun!! Wow...scary. And what does this have to do with anything???? Does my avatar make you cry?

Yeah, a real intelligent discussion with you as always techno.... (sarcasm) Oh yeah, a real nice way to back out of a discussion after being proven wrong....

BTW, have you read the above articles...you may actually learn something from them techno...and open your mind for once....

...and as usual, little ole Thai resorts to insults when it gets too much.
Relax, the world is not out to get you.
:uzi:

Very one sided, That is like saying there are to many people with cars because too many people die in automobiles every year.

Guns have protected the lives of the inocent for over a hundred years. True people should be responsible when owning and using guns, as should they with cars.

If you belive that people should not have guns, it is only fair that you should want automobiles gone also. More people die from automobiles than guns in the US.

My point is this, misuse of anything, from a gun to a skateboard can lead to a senseless death of an inocent person. It is not constitutional to condemn something based on the way some people use it.

FYI, I served with the 1st CAV in kuwait, and as a police officer in Oregon, I have seen inocent people hurt buy guns, but i have seen many more hurt buy many other things, mostly automotive accidents.

IMO

Who said that people should not have guns? Not me. My argument is that gun ownership needs more controls to limit WHO can legally obtain a firearm and WHY they need a firearm.
Thai should be allowed to own a firearm(s) because he has a clean criminal background, has no medical reasons of concern and has a valid reason for wanting it.
John Bad Citizen who just served 5 years for aggravated assault and has a history of documented mental issues, should in my opinion not be allowed to legally obtain a firearm because he presents an increased risk to society by using the firearm irresponsibly or illegally.

But what about illegal firearms? Bad guys will always be able to get a gun from somewhere you say. True. But it is more difficult to get than going to the store and buying one. There are already laws and law enforcement available to try and prevent this. But in conjunction with increased measures to regulate legally obtained firearms, all available measures to combat the illegal sides need to be upgraded too. I would like to see much more severe punishments to act as deterrents for starters.

TOY2G, the typical 'well cars kill people' argument is totally irrelevant to the gun control debate. Automobiles are designed for a completely different purpose and used for completely different reasons.
A car is for transportation.
A firearm is a projectile firing weapon. A weapon is a tool used with the aim of causing damage or harm (either physical or mental) to living beings, structures or systems. When used as deterrent in a self defense situation, it directly implies that its use will cause damage or harm.
You cannot compare the two.
Besides, there are already more controls on the automotive industry and drivers to make driving safer than there are on firearms. If you can think of anything to make driving safer, then discuss that separately. I don't want to ban gun ownership, I just want to make it safer.
