When did they change the rear brake design during 3rd gen years? was it in 2001?

Sooo. to continue my nightmare. I bought a used axle and installed it. he said it was for a 3rd gen 4runner.

Here is a pic (not my truck) of my style of brakes:

Here is a pic (not my truck) of the brakes on the new axle I was sold. It came with all the brakes and everything mounted to it.I didnt realise until too late that the brakes, wheel cylinder, and backing plate are all different. It ends up stretching the ebrake cable at a weird angle, it just wont work on this truck. Notice that the auto adjuster lever (rests on the star wheel) is BEHIND the star wheel instead of in front of it., and the adjuster plate has moved to be mounted to the other pad.

My question is, does anyone know what year they transitioned to a new backing plate, different wheel cylinder, different shoes, different brake auto adjust assembly, on the 3rd gen 4runners?

Now i need to go return the axle and get another one, or pay to have this shit pressed off and press on my new bearing, abs ring etc.

is 1999 the first year of the new design, or the last year of the old design?

Well i only have one source, but he mentioned that the brakes changed in 1999 to the different design.

He could be wrong though. Some time after 1998 though, of that i can unfortunately assure you!

Not sure why you bought the new axle (no idea what project you are working).. but here is a thought. Just unbolt the axle stub and brake assembly off your old axle and bolt them into the new axle since you want to keep the previous style of brakes? Just 4 bolts per side if the brake lines and e-brake cable are unhooked.

The backstory is i bought this truck recently now knowing it had a bent axle. Following my buddy driving it home i noticedwobble in the tire. Rear end shop did a runout test and confirmed its bent to shit. Had all the hardware pressed off the old axle.
