when to change MAF

I have cleaned my MAF for 3 or 4 times. Now I cleaned it and got P0171. Maybe I should change to a new one?

So when it is time to get a new one? What kind of MAF you guys bought? OEM?
Thanks.

They're not cheap, so you might want to make sure that the MAF is actually malfunctioning...Take a look at this http://tacoma.site40.net/4Runner_96.../02rmsour/2002/024runne/sf5vzfe/mafm/insp.pdf

When I changed mine it was actually cheaper to have the dealer replace it (including labour) than it was was for me to buy it, even with company accounts. Mine died due to me being a little overzealous with the K&N Air filter oil. :frusty:

I have to clean my K/N this weekend. Is there anything I should not do? I'm assuming that you over did it with the oil.... just a light coating will do?
I have done it before, but after reading your post.. I'm a tad concerned.

My 3G is going to the dealer for some semi major work shortly I don't wanna add that to the bill.

If you got the code right after messing with the maf make sure everything is tight and back in place. A vacuum leak will also throw 171.

My idle is now at around 1000 RPM and 1500RPM at park. Any suggestion?

When it's cold or hot? Cold that's fine. Hot, have you disconnected the battery lately? Could be it is just relearning things. Give it a few days to settle down.

It is right now in Ca USA. I think it should be warm. The problem is that I have P0171 which I cleaned with OBDII scannner and it comes back.

Ha ha I meant when the engine is cold or hot. When it's cold idling at 1500 in park/neutral is normal. In gear it will be around 1K. After it warms up it will settle down to around 600 in gear.

P0171 can be a maf issue, a vacuum leak or a bad pre cat O2 sensor.

Yeah, it idles high around 1000 RPM in gear and 1500RPM in park when warm. Could any leak in the cold air intake before TB cause vacuum leak and raise the idle RPM to this high and throw code P0171?

Thanks.

A vacuum leak will cause a lean condition. Depending on if the computer sees it and what it does with it you could end up with a low/rough idle or high idle. Since you have a high idle and the code I'd check for vacuum leaks first for sure.
