When to get a transmission cooler?

Been reading about pink milkshake etc....

Next year I'm planning on towing a 2000lb Travel Trailer all over the country... in the hot summer and up mountains.

I'm getting mixed input on if I need a tranny cooler or not.

2002 - 102,400 miles. 4 x 2. Pretty much factory. Always use Valvoline Syn Power. Gobi rack.

Actually... how would I know if I had one already? Which I doubt since I didn't have a tow hitch or wiring.

And, you don't.

You have a stock one, which is built into the radiator, thus causing the pink milkshake.

The true cool cooler has a designed temp regulation with no moving parts.

And it's made by Dana. It's also designed for low pressure drop during cold operation.
 
No. No in line thermostat.

I can't remember mine, but I got it at Autozone a couple years ago.

Mounted in front of my AC condenser, and it's fine.

You COULD put in a micro filter to help keep it clean, as well as an in line temp gauge while you're at it.
 
The 70264 has a LPD (low pressure drop) which allows the ATF to bypass flowing through the cooler per se until 170, when the cooler begins to open and it fully opens at 180.

It is made by Tru Cool for B&M. Make sure to mount it up against the condenser in front of the fan.

I'd also make upgrading to Tundra 199mm brakes to aid in stopping. I think they will work for ya given the 3 spoke rims you have.
 
TruCool 4544 has same specs as 4589 (20,000 btu vs 21,000 btu) but has a thinner profile (3/4" vs 1.5") and slightly larger inlets (3/8" vs 11/32"). Both have the LPD design which self regulates flow with respect to fluid temp/viscosity.
This thinner profile gives more installation flexibility.

when bypassing the stock trans cooler you need to get one with an increased btu rating.
V happy with mine re installation and performance.
And no, neither of these is too large or provides too much cooling. People sometimes raise this as a possible concern, but it is a non issue.

Thanks everyone! Here is my plan with one more question.

1. B&M 70264 SuperCooler Automatic Transmission
2. "mount it up against the condenser in front of the fan."
3. ? I like the look of this Filter + Guage kit. Thoughts ?

Hey, again, thanks to the community for all the advice. Attached is what I think I'm going to go with unless you see some glaring mistake.

I'll take it all to my brothers shop along with a lot of SCOTCH. :thumb3:

The description of the cooler mentions it's of a low pressure drop design. And I wouldn't be too surprised if Long Manufacturing would make the coolers for BM as well as for themselves. Shame I can't post Longs brochure. It's in pdf.
 
My uncle used to supply Longs with hard parts for fifteen years as a parts distributor. When he finished doing such in 2004, they gave him a couple of coolers for his Explorers; one a B&M and the other was a Tru Cool. I don't know if he ever installed them.

I think he got a cooler for his RV as well if I remember correctly.

I would buy a Scanguage ll (pretty sure it has trans temp readings for your '02 but double check) and just run a Magnefine trans filter. Go with the Tru cool 4544, my B&M 70268 is NOT up to task here in Denver. I can't even run in 4Hi when it is below zero! Will be swapping for a 4544 very soon.
