Where are my 4WD VSVs?!

So I have been in contact with TheDurk (4wd master fixer! ) and I cannot find my VSVs on my 2001 sport edition.

I need to find these so I can fix my 4wd and figure why its not engaging, I saw some other pictures from 2001 sport editions and haven't seen the vsv's in their pics either, does anyone know where they are?!

01s and 02s have an electric acutuator instead of a vacuum operated actuator.

I see. So my 4wd light just keeps blinking and never engages, last time it worked was last winter. Where should I start the diag process?

SuperMoney, see my last PM. Hey, I just answered your questions. I didn't realize you had a 2001. I admit I should have looked at your sig. I PM'd you the factory manual diagnostic for the electric ADD, but anyone who has worked on these is sure welcome to chime in...I've never touched one.

My 4x4 takes about 30 secs to engage and its getting slower so I've been lurking around and found this:

lots of advice. The thread is originally about a 99 but there is info about 2001-2002. Seems that there are 4 sensors, front add and the dreaded transfer case actuator to check(hope for a sensor). Good luck.

I would tap the actuators (black round casing) with handle of a screwdriver and see if it causes it to move back.

Subscribed. I have the same issue on mine (2001 sport). I've only tried engaging it once since I got it a couple months ago. When I did, the light kept blinking and hitting the 4wd button again would not turn it off. A short drive and a few sharp turns at very low speed told me the 4wd was engaged. Couldn't get it to disengage. Put it in neutral and let it roll a little bit in a parking lot. Still wouldn't come out. Turned the truck off, took the key out, then put the key back in and started it. Blinking light was off and truck was back in 2wd. Since then I've left the 4wd alone. Not gonna fool with it again till I'm in a position to really deal with it in case it gets expensive. That said, I have a feeling it's just a $40 sensor. A buddy of mine who's a toyota tech said it sounds like it is too. He said to be glad I don't have a 4th gen. The sensors for those are inside the transfer case!

I have a 2002 Sport and it has the two capped lines on the left fender well.

Man, they look the same as my 98 looked like. Maybe I didn't look close enough on the 98. The caps on the lines on my 2002 look like the breather cap atop the rear diff. One line is a larger diameter than the other. So these are just breathers. What purpose do they serve, just to ventilate? Do they let heat out? Why are they needed? Thanks for your input.

Oil and air both expand with heat, and contract with cold. Without the breathers, the oil would leak past the seals.

Yes I am thinking it is the sensor, will be taking a look at it tomorrow.

So I read through a huge thread on Yotatech about the TC sensors and after finally realized the 2001s are different in another way (sensors, and locations) I still cannot find exactly what I am looking for.

Does anyone have pictures of the 4 sensor locations on the 2001 transfer case? I read we don't have a switch on the front diff (which I spent 30 minutes looking for).

Mainly, which switches on my 2001 transfer case am I looking for so I can test them with a multimeter / clean them (or replace).
