Where are you guys sourcing your parts? I have a 2nd gen and am not finding an abundance of parts suppliers for several things. I'm getting ready to start my knock sensor/harness replacement and wanted to do a few other things while it was down. The knock sensor & harness are readily found but I have a MAF code and a cold start problem I want to tackle at the same time. The cold start injector, engine coolant sensor and Mas Air Flow sensor haven't been the easiest to find (and are usually SIGNIFICANTLY higher in price than the myriad of 3rd gens parts that pop-up in my Google searches).

I've tried 1A Auto, Rock Auto, Chain parts stores, etc. - anywhere else to consider??

I have not but may have to resort to that. Was hoping to find more economical solutions although I admit, some of my fear of their ridiculous prices is not from personal experience. Maybe it's not as bad as I think??

You would be surprised at what's still readily available from Toyota for the dealer to order. But have you actually diagnosed anything as bad, or are you just going to fire parts at it? What "MAF" code? These trucks don't have a MAF. The engine that you're working with would also be good for people to know if you want help to diagnose it.

I bought this as a 2nd vehicle (so I don't have to drive my dually everyday) and for something to tinker on. I bought it with a CEL code 24 & 52. Upon investigation, someone has run a shielded cable from the ECM to the knock sensor harness, my 'assumption' is that was a quick attempt to resolve it without pulling the intake?? I also have an intermittent cold start problem; my hope was to find some reasonably priced parts for the ECT/Cold Start Injector and swap them when I do the knock sensor/harness.

I'd love for this to be a reliable little beater to save wear/tear and diesel in my other vehicle. Swapping parts out proactively as I did other work was a part of that plan. However, some of my hesitation (analysis/paralysis) has been around cost. I paid $2k for it; if I drop another $2k into it - I could likely find a nicer/more reliable 3rd gen and fix that up. Ultimately, I'd like to end up with a vehicle I know will perform when I turn the key and this one just hasn't given me that warm/fuzzy yet. Just really hate to pull the intake and not replace any other potential problems and end up having to pull it AGAIN

I enjoy DIY but have a family and therefore, not a lot of time for projects. Gaining insight from others here has really helped allow me to work through these issues faster than on my own...

1994 3.0 3vze / auto / 4x4
I plan to swap the knock sensor and harness (found Toyota parts on eBAY)
Need to troubleshoot/resolve intermittent cold start (beginning to look at Engine Coolant Temp and Cold Start Injector)
Need to look at Air Flow sensor(s)

Hoping to order parts in order to swap over Thanksgiving break

Summit racing, LCEngineering, 22RE Performance, Marlin Crawler for transmission (love MC's shifter seat-bushing kit!) / suspension, etc.

For parts not critical to making truck run, steer, stop, wherever and whenever you want it to, any place that's cheap with good reviews.

Sometimes dealer is also good for little parts not worth spending the time driving, shopping, etc. i.e., antenna mount nut, trim fasteners, oil filter for last minute job, etc. Sometimes you don't have a choice like special transmission fluid for Toyota's.

What "MAF" code? These trucks don't have a MAF. The engine that you're working with would also be good for people to know if you want help to diagnose it.

Thought all post 88'S had the MAF whether 22re or 3.0(could be wrong) I know my 94 has one
Having the correct info as far as what the OP is working definitely helps when they give that info

It’s not a MAF sensor in the modern sense. It’s VAFM, Volume Air Flow Meter. Works in a completely different manner and the two aren’t functionally interchangeable, even though the terms often are.

One of the issues I'm trying to resolve is a Code 24. If my research is correct, that is the "Intake air temp sensor" which is a part of the air flow meter. Can anyone confirm or deny that? I have a 'parts' 4runner and am going to start swapping parts next weekend to narrow it down...

Yes it’s part of the VAFM. Code 24 is an open or short circuit code for the intake air temp sensor. Have you checked the wiring at the harness and the VAFM itself? Do you have a manual and a multimeter? Fair warning- DO NOT remove the two screws on the sides of the harness attachment at the VAFM.

I have a meter but no manual. I'm going to swap the whole VAFM assembly from my donor 4rnr and see if that resolves it. IF not, more troubleshooting will ensue...

I have read that removing those screws will cause the internals to come apart without an easy way to put them back together. THANKS for the reminder...
