Where would you prefer your tires rub?

I know, it's an odd question. I have lifted my 4Runner. I am considering larger tires, eventually. With the larger tires, I am considering either wheel spacers or new UCAs (to prevent UCA rub). I've read that larger wheels (285|75R16) can rub on the inner fender well without spacers, or on the outer fender well with 1.25" spacers. It seems like a shot in the dark until you buy the parts and mount everything up, whether any setup will rub or not; too many variables, including the differences in actual tire dimensions. Onto my question...

If you need to do some pounding/bending to fix some tire rub, would it be better to need to do it on the fender (outer) or the inner side?

That is an odd question, but I understand it since I had to deal w/ it not to long ago.

I have the 99 limited (limited flares) and recently got the 285/75/16 Duratracs. I immediately had plenty of rubbing.

my solutions.

1. trim the valence and the attached flares. I just cut the interior portion of it, so not noticeable unless you look underneath the bumper.
2. pinch weld mod
3. 1/2 body lift

4. 0.75 bora spacers (not yet installed)

In hindsight, I went with the SCS F5 4.5in BS, to minimize the aforementioned solutions, but now I wished I went w/ 3.5in BS since I had to do them anyways and I wouldn't have needed the wheel spacers.

To answer your question, get the tires you want and deal with it. If you want larger tires, it's inevitable.

Aftermarket UCA's will let you get more caster and push that tire forward.

I only rub in the back of the wheel well on the inside near the pinch weld. With spacers and wider tires (305/70r16) I still dont rub on outside of fender. Its a small amount of rub and with the mods I did it never tears up the tires.

I have SPC UCA's with the caster pushed all the way out to get the tire away from rear fender well.

I also have cut the inside Limited flares and hammered the pinch weld back.

I still have 1.25" spacers installed. I may remove them now since my SPC arms should clear the tires. But it still does not rub outside fender.

Either way you will rub somewhere, I dont like rubbing the UCA because after some time it starting tearing into my tire.

285s, no spacers, keep front sway bar on in town, 2.5" lift up front.

No rubbing even with stock UCAs.

Add spacers. Now you hit the pinch welds. :( AND you hit the fender at full compression on the trail, bend the fender. It happened to me, depiful and many others.

Like Brian said I've also bent my fender wheeling, but I mean for the stance it's totally worth it

This^ I rubbed like hell, smashed my tires into my fenders a couple times, all the fun stuff. Then I trimmed the fender and limited flare, combined with 4" BS wheels and no rubbing. Even when I do this

I'm running 4" BS wheels, 1.25" spacers, 285s, and LR UCAs... Sooo much rubbing. It's one of those things that seems to happen randomly, and like you said, too many variables to be able to predict it.

When I only had the tires (stock wheels) and no spacers, I rubbed on the frame and the UCA. I added spacers to stop that rubbing.

Next came wheels. I left the spacers on, and it started to rub the rear and top of the fender well.

I added UCAs next. The alignment shop wasn't able to move it forward much and keep it within alignment, so I kept it where it was at and within spec.

Very true. Both of my front fenders are bent up and don't line up, but oh well, they can get hit back into place eventually. IT's not too bad at all.

If you need to do some pounding/bending to fix some tire rub, would it be better to need to do it on the fender (outer) or the inner side?

What I'd recommend is trimming both honestly, especially if you plan on running trails. Potentially even consider something like a .5" or 1" body lift to help also.

Great! Thanks for all the feedback. This gives me some data points to plan out my approach for tires, UCAs, spacers, etc. Since the outer fender can be bent out in severe situations, it sounds like it is best to err on the side of UCA rubbing and then move the tires out to solve that.

Considered running skinnys? I love mine and there should be a good bit less rubbing.

Actually, yes! I'm thinking I'd prefer 255|85R16 tires over 285s, mainly because they would raise my clearance and hurt my gas mileage "less" :) I'd like to do the Tundra brake upgrade at some point, so I would need new wheels or spacers. I'm thinking of doing the 255 tires and 1.25" spacers. What is your setup like?

No its not LoL. $300+ in body damage everytime I land medium to hard on a bump is not worth it.
derpiful just take off your spacers !

Nothing but sarcasm haha I thought I laid it on pretty heavy, guess not. Definitely get a body lift or lose the spacers. Sorry it's hard to convey emotion through text sometimes.

My fenders are fine now and back to where they originally were.. I talked to TheArkMaster about trimming the flares and whatnot, and that's what pretty much convinced me to leave the spacers on (talked to him during/after Rock Therapy).

Take a look here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/120034-crazydubmans-97-limited-runner-build-6.html#post1188997. That's what I'm going to do very soon. Mainly because I'll have the option to stick with the flares if I ever go 35's- because it seems most 35 builds do not have flares.

ShooterMcGavin sorry to have a bit of a thread hijack, but it gives you the idea of what's in store being not-so-stock anymore!

285 duratracs, 16x8.5, 3.75BS, I rub a lot up front when I back out of parking spots, rear facing portion of liner. My fender liner hit it once on the trail and while the liner stayed intact, it pulled out a cooter hair and now rubs every time I'm reversing and turning. Oddly enough it's still quiet on trails when stuffed.

To answer the thread title: my pants

I'd try to lessen the issue with a body lift :bluejump: that said, I have a 1" body lift and it still rubs bad. not in pants :violin:

I guess my 1.5" body lift had saved my fenders. Never touch fender when stuffed and my 1.25" spacers.

hour, I am sorry to hear that you are not getting any rubbing in your pants. I understand your frustration :(

The lift I have installed now feels pretty high. I do have a 0.5" BL on-hand, but I really don't want to raise my truck up any higher. If I could lower my SL 1.5" and then install the BL, I'd be fine with that. I'm doing this build on a budget, so I'm buying parts where I get deals, and sometimes they are not the ideal equipment. I'm not doing my maintenance on a budget, just the non-essential mods.

I'm running a strange size of tire. 255/75/17. They're taller than the usual 265/75/16 a lot of people run, but still a little shorter than a 33" tire. It's right in between. The only rubbing I had was my mudflaps up front and the front flare that attaches to the bumper. Very minimal trimming on both.

I don't get it, My Runner with the OME heavy springs f/r and 285 75 16 BFG AT KO2 were touching the stock UCAs while sitting on the ground with the wheels pretty much straight. If I didn't put wheel spacers on I couldn't have even driven it home without losing the front tires much less wheel it anywhere :noidea:

What wheels?

Stock sway bar? (I realize this matters little when sitting flat and parked)

How much front lift? (I have 2.5" front)

Where were you rubbing?

:)
