Where's the mic?

Looking for placement ideas for a microphone that will connect to my aftermarket stereo for Bluetooth calls.

Where have you guys installed external microphones in your 4Runners?

I put mine on the steering wheel, in front of the turn signal lever. I've never had any complaints about being hard to hear or ambient noise. Its out of the way and mostly out of sight.

I ran the cable up the A-pillar and used the clip to attach it to the headboard. Sits right next to the rear view mirror and I can use the visor just fine too. It's never in the way and picks up the audio very well. I've thought about routing it into the sunglass holder, but it's been working fine so far. They usually have plenty of extra cable for this. I'll try to remember to snag a picture later.

Mines also on the steering wheel cover right in the middle of the turn signal and wiper controls. I ran the wire for the mic behind the dash and came out right in between the wheel cover and below the gauge cluster.

Seems to work just fine and unless you have a keep eye, almost completely unnoticeable. Easier than putting it on the visor and no risk of bumping it since it's in a spot you'd never touch.

Ran mine up the pillar and it connects to the drivers side visor. Fully functional visor that can be swung out and used all the same as before. No problems at all with this location.

Put mine inside this thing...

I clipped mine on the instrument cluster bezel just above the steering column. No issues with people hearing me when on a call.

My setup is similar to Streetcreper's except it's attached to the pillar itself, not the visor.

Is the wire easily routed up the A-pillar - do you remove or loosen the plastic?

Every install I've done has been on headliner / a-pillar area. The wire is thin enough, you should be able to stuff it without removing much or any plastic.

Look at the pull handle. You will see two rectangles that you will need to pry out gently. Underneath you will see a screw under each one. These things are notorious for stripping out because I think they use some kind of thread locker on it. When I did it, I pulled one out and stripped the other of course.

With one loose, I was able to pull the pillar cover back enough to slip the wires in.

I'll be going back in soon to add more wires for my dash-cam and QI charger. This time I have an impact screwdriver that should hopefully bust that screw loose.

I ended up drilling the heads off so I could pull the handle off. Once off there was enough of a nub to clamp some vice grips on and spin them off. Then I replaced them with some bolts with a 10mm socket head instead of a phillips head. If you can find some bolts with an allen head they would work even better, the socket fitting in there was kind of tight.

I have mine up by the map light. It's held on with a small peice of heavy duty (5lb) 3M double stick tape. It's held on for 2 Vegas summers so I don't think it's going anywhere.

I would put it up high. I have mine on the steering column on my other car and I get complaints about not hearing me. I don't look down when I drive so it wasn't the best place for it. A pillar or up by the map lights is where it's going to end up.
