Another good example of why not to text and drive! During last nights snow storm my wife and I were in the 4Runner on the highway and it was starting to get slick, most slowed down but there was a car ahead that was fishtailing continuously, likely bad tires......went to pass (2 lanes over) and sure a s*** the guy has his phone on the wheel either texting or taking a photo to tweet #drivinginsnow

Was he driving a mustang? I was on 35W in the storm and some guy in a mustang was fishtailing over each side of his lane. I was in 2 WD doing just fine when he really fish tailed to the right. I saw my opening and passed him on the left just as his car swung way out into my lane. I had good traction so I just barely escaped his back-end hitting my rear.
I saw 6 others in the ditch on my way home not including 3 spin outs right in front of me.

That aluminum sure does crumple well - I can't tell you how many people I would see in Houston on 8, going 80 mph, txting, and drifting all over the place. It's amazing that there are as few accidents on that beltway as there are.
As to how fast you would have to be going to do that kind of damage - my mom was sitting at a stop light in her '02 Suburban, person hit them from behind (didn't slow down at all) at 30 mph - totaled both cars (they were in some other full sized SUV - I think a Navigator). You hit it just right, and it doesn't take much - which is how cars are designed now to take the impact rather than the driver/passengers.

Wow, that was just right down the road from me (100 miles is relatively speaking in TX terms). That makes me sick to think about for those people who owned the truck right off the dealer lot. People who text and drive have a death wish for themselves and anyone else riding with them. On my morning commute, I see mothers driving down the loop doing 70mph with little kids in the car and they have that big phone propped up on the steering wheel just going at it texting. Quite a few idiots in this world. Hard to stay out of their way sometimes.

The new Fords have aluminum BODIES. The frame is still steel.. What you are seeing is a designed in crush zone so the force of the impact is reduced before it gets to the cab. Ford had a commercial several years ago where they crushed a F-150 from the front and rear with bulldozers until most of the front and rear ends almost half crushed. Then 4 passengers opened all the doors and got out to show the cab was untouched.
My guess is the 4R driver looked up at the last instant and slammed on his brakes causing the famous nose dive we see commented on so much. Since most of the damage looks like it is above the line of the bumper I'm guessing he came close to submarining the Ford's bumper. And from past observations in here, if all the airbags deployed the insurance company will total it.
