ARB vs Smittybilt Awning

Does anyone know if it is really worth paying the extra $100 for the ARB awning? I'm looking at getting one for my Gobi Stealth Rack, I live in canada and our camping season is pretty short so I will only use it for 2 or 3 months a year and lets say 10 full days of camping really. The Smittybilt costs $260 CAD and the ARB $360 CAD I'm wondering if the ARB is really $100 better or it is just the name that cost that much.

I've never seen the Smittybilt awning, but I know that the ARB has one thing my CVT doesnt.

If you look at GSPRunners awning in the pic above you can see that it has only 3 velcro straps on either side that secure the awning fabric to the poles that run paralell to the ground. The ARB awning has a strap about every 12 inches, so when the wind starts kicking, the fabric doesn't move nearly as much. It fits much tighter.

ajonesnv and I are both running the 6.5' Smittybuilt awnings. For the money, 180 bucks, you absolutly cannot go wrong with it. Build quality, looks, size, etc. are pretty good. I'm thinking about getting the 8' model and permanently mounting it on my pop-up trailer.

I was going to troll about putting a Sunsetter on mine, but after your photos now I just want to build one.

Thanks

Thanks for al the advise guys, I'm considering now to get the ARB or the Tepui (If I can easily find it in Canada) apparently in a meet up here in Edmonton last night there's a guy that has some in stock. So Is either Tepui or ARB. I know is a $100 more that the smittybilt but $100 is nothing these days, and I don't really want to install a tarp on 2 poles after all the money I have spent trying to have a nice looking truck (No Offence) I know the tarp also works...

Here is a picture of my 4runner

IIRC, there's usually talk of a 20% off coupon on autoanything.com that was valid for the ARB awnings. I'm trying to keep an eye out for the next time one comes up. I'll be buying an ARB awning shortly... I had all the parts a click away from order to build one myself, but I'm taking the clean lazy route this time.

Picking up my 4runner TE Thursday, and wanting to order the 8ft ARB awning for the baja rack. Where would be the best place in Canada to buy from for cost and service

The Gear Shop is a dealer for ARB, CVT, and TJM. They should be able to get you any of their awnings.

I personally have the CVT and I like it. However, the ARB has more attachment points for the poles that extend horizontally from the vehicle. busmup808 has the TJM and could perhaps comment on it.

The CVT has one at both ends, and one in the middle while the ARB has one like every foot or so which allows the awning to be pulled more taut and not sag as much.

Here's my CVT... you can see the velcro straps I am talking about.

Here's an example of an ARB from Google.

DIY Awning

I just got done building mine. Just need to to add a few things. I made this out of pvc pipe and a 8x10 tarp. Super cheap. And it mounts to my rack

I took inspiration from this and also built my own awning in a similar fashion. I'll attach some photos. I used a 6x8 ft tarp with a 2" outer shell pvc. I used 3/4" for the inside pvc pipe that the tarp is fastened to. The tarp fits perfectly so that when completely rolled up, it is tightly fit enough that it will not come out due to wind from driving. I may post a more detailed build thread at some point.
