which bull bar do you like best?

:happens:
Even the Fairfax Co sheriff that responded gave me a giggle about it.

There's plenty of documentation of the dangers and dmg SUVs and trucks can cause to small economy cars. Been around for years and years.

I think I'll stick with Muti's assessment of the possibility of major frame or front end damage would be negligible. I think the thing would crumple before it caused frame damage, and its just doesn't cover the same real estate to worry about the radiator, grill, hood or engine bay. At the point I'm crumpling it enough to do bumper damage, I think Id probably be alternatively crumpling my naked bumper as well.

Thanks for the pic, JAC.

I dont go into the jungle and Im not a die hard off roader. As such, the gigantic bumpers and bars that cover the whole front of the rig, all the way up to the grill and around the headlights dont make any sense for me. They look like Im trying to be something Im not, and I suspect alot of guys with them are trying to look tougher then they are. The bars were talking about, that are solid stainless steel, mount to the frame, and only cover the bumper make the most sense, and dont look over the top obnoxious.

I shop for what suits me, and I dont try to impress anyone. As such, the bars from the OP are the best for me. YMMV.

Fonerunner's is the only one i like...probably because it isn't chrome and it looks better on a non fatlip

My 2nd gen pushed a little cars trunk ALL the way to the rear seats at 20mph. No push/bull/brush guard. The damage I incurred was a cracked turn signal.

bullshit

My cousin had the brush guard on her xterra and I saw the damage and the report said that if it weren't for the brush guard she would have been injured because it diverted the impact another way and it saved the car from being totaled.

So for me I actually do believe they help. Just depends on speed angle etc. And who knows when a riot breaks out and you gotta run people over to get somewhere? Zombie epidemic perhaps? ;-P i'll be getting a full brush guard, black, after suspension is on. They do make it look aggressive too so that's a plus.

Seriously, if you think I'm spending my Sunday making up stories to people on a forum over a push bar selection and install, you have issues... :rockthrow:
I don't NEED the protection of a full bumper OR full bull bar. I'm simply looking for something small and unobtrusive that offers a little bit of functionality that I can mount lights to.

You ever driven in Texas brush? Mesquite SUCKS! I want to SEE it before I plow over it, and I'm half blind at night to start with.

What are my other options for mounting lights up front to light up the night and see those devils before they implant themselves in my tires?

There's no issues with Dylan, any person with a computer can waste their time making up stories any day.

and I can show you proof of just the opposite, not that you arent right in that situation... just sayin, check this out... I think those things are a case by case scenario...

you know..i don't even know how to respond.

this is a hell of alot cheaper than a bullbar and offers just as much protection

I actually think it offers more protection than the bull bar, follow my thoughts...

the bumper and every part of cars are made to smash and crumple a certain way to protect the driver and passengers.

A bull bar changes the way that that occurs and I think actually would cause more problems in the way a vehicle hit you. Now, I am sure that there are plenty of instances like above where it has diverted a blow to the side... but I think that based on the way that its designed it has no option but to bend back into the radiator bumper etc.

now bumpers like the TJM and ARB are meant to make sure it takes a stronger hit to get thru it to the crumple zones so it may be a more jarring impact but would take more brut force to get the frame bent to the cabin..

at least thats my fundamental knowledge of physics and Newtons law of motion.

Now, Bigtime, dude, if you want to buy a bull bar, and you like the way they look Do it! I tend to think some look pretty good too.

Just dont get caught up in an illlusion that it will protect you. Same as I realized that a rollbar from a 1st gen wasnt gonna help anything...

its an illusion of safety I think... Imo

Hit the back of this car with a "brush guard" at about 10 mph. Damage to my rig - slight dent to the chrome bumper and a scuff on the fender by the corner light where the headlight guard section popped back. That's it. Nothing else. The guard was mounted to the front of the frame, and through the bumper with "L" brackets. If it was just mounted to the frame, like these are, it would have easliy folded back into the grill, hood and fenders.

My $0.02 -

These imitation "bull bars" are purely cosmetic. They are not "solid stainless steel" as someone said earlier, they may be stainless tubing, not solid. Huge difference there. If it only comes to the top of the bumper, then you are probably not going to multiply any damage in an accident. It's cheaper to mount lights to the bumper. (Insert Opinon here : If you already have the "fat lip" bumper, adding something in front of it is only going to make it look goofier)

Brushguards, if not properly mounted and reinforced pose a real issue to the grill, fenders, and hood; whereas if it weren't there, you may get away with bumper only damage.

You want a bull bar - get a bull bar. ARB, Shrockworks, TJM...

Hope that helps some.

Ridiculous! Again wrong bar, wrong application.

They are NOT the same, James! The push bars cover the height of your fat lip bumper, no grill, no headlights, no hood.

Death comes to plenty of small cars if they want to play with a bigger truck / SUV...with or without a front guard

Unless your 2nd gen was made out of Diamond, this story is complete horse shit. There was either more damage to your 4R, or the trunk was already touching the backseat of that little car.

after just being in an accident not more then a few months ago with a brush guard i can say the do help if mounted as said above, kregg pretty much hit the nail on the head imo, saying they do offer protection just not in every circumstance, the pics above with the re**** who drove his ford/chevy into a gate would have suffered the same damage if the grill guard was there or not, as he must have has some speed going to do that at all and also even if he had an ARB the damage would have been a same, soooo that guys stupidity has no baring on the plus or minus of any of the bull guards brush guards or ARB's we're talking about here, the guy was just a moron, i don't know what else to say about that.

bull bars do nothing and just don't look right imo, they belong on fake suv's like Mercedes and such not on a real truck, again imo, i think this whole thread was meant to be a style issue and not about the protection advantages of the bull bar, so i'll comment on that, the style sucks, i know your trying to make the runner look "rich" but i think these things are over the top, like your trying to hard and in the end just look cheesy.

Well I kinda like the way they look. YMMV as always.

Anyone know of a URL for step by step BullBar installation for 2014 4Runners?

Have to go with the ARB Bull Bar. They are designed around the proper crash testing to protect occupants in a seriously bad collision, but strong to deflect animal strikes. All while increase approach angles AND matching the cosmetics of the truck itself.

I run it. Have seen first hand on a family members rig what happens to the ARB when someone hits a deer @60mph. Only slightly collapsed the accordion folds in the mounting bracket, as they were designed to. Replaced those and put the bumper back on their 4Runner. I'll never run anything else.

I'll bite on the 5 year old thread.

THATS NOT A BULL BAR. THATS A BUMPER!

I dont see how an arb bumper that looks like every one thats made for any vehicle matches the 4runner cosmetics. IMO it just looks out of place.
