Which driveshaft is this/do I need to order

So my driveshaft broke off while driving, had to call roadside assistance (thankfully had) to tow my 2005 limited v6 back to my house which was less then 2 miles away. It's been a month now and I just want to make sure I'm ordering the right parts. So can anyone tell me if this is considered the rear or front one I need? I'm attaching pics of it from under the vehicle. In all pics the right side of pic will be towards the front of my vehicle.

It appears to be the front one. You had a u-joint failure which is why the driveshaft fell off. I think most 4Runners have greaseable u-joints which need to be greased periodically, like every, or every other oil change.

If indeed in all the photos the "In all pics the right side of pic will be towards the front of my vehicle" then from what I'm seeing it's the rear driveshaft that broke, not the front, in the first photo you can clearly see the left rear tire and the driveshaft is going up toward that end/back of the 4R where it's still attached, hince it has to be the rear of the vehicle and the rear driveshaft!

There is a difference in the rear driveshaft for a 2WD and a 4WD so she needs to be sure to order the correct one.

You're correct about them needing greased but it's absolutely the rear driveshaft. I just replaced all 4 ujoints under mine and the muffler (in the photo) is absolutely not next to the front driveshaft.


If there's not major damage to the driveshaft itself it might just need new ujoints which are really pretty inexpensive but slightly annoying to swap. If the driveshaft is damaged, it will need replaced but at least it's ~4 bolts at each end to replace and should have you back on the road.

How fast were you driving when it broke?
Were you able to stop immediately? How were you towed home?
A typical Toyota dealer can make this repair into a large expense for you, so be careful and talk to lots of people.
Are there car shows in your city? The men and women exhibiting their show cars are car buffs and usually know all the local shops that do repairs. Ask about independent shops that know drivetrains. You might be able to repair this shaft for a fraction the cost of replacement.

Cheapest option is probably finding a used one on ebay, greasing the joints, and bolting it on.

That's a rear driveshaft. I replaced mine with the Lexus GX470 part, which is less prone to the clunking that occurs with the stock 4R driveshaft. (It was a recall for the Lexus, not so for Toyota)

That part number is 37110-60A40

Sorry I have not been able to check these messages I appreciate everyone for getting back to me I will respond to one of the first ones by saying I was coming under an overpass I just left my house I was about to get on the interstate so I was made me accelerating up to 20 miles on the service road when it happened I immediately pulled over turn up the car contacted my insurance cuz I have roadside assistance it took about 2 hours for the tow truck guy to come but I live less than 2 minutes from where it happened and he told me back to my house and I haven't ****ed with it since because I don't know which I need to order yet but I'm doing that tonight as long as I can confirm what I need to do

I appreciate all the advice although I don't know too many people that could leave me in those directions I do have some handyman type acquaintances that said that they would do it for free once I ordered the part and I figured if I can get the part for under $100 I just wanted to make sure that everything I needed was included like the slip yoke and the u-joints that broke off

Thank you for your reply that's what I was thinking at first when I had a friend go under there and inspected and he saw the damage to the u-joints and the slip yoke that's why they're separated from the drive shaft it wasn't like that I don't think when it first broke off I'm not sure how to see if there's a lot of damage to it would dents be too much damage to have to get a new one I can try to take better pictures maybe and investigate so even though it is the rear drive shaft vthanks for confirming that if I had to get a new one assembly does that come with the u-joints and slip yoke

And I know I should be ashamed of myself for not being more demanding of one of my friends who drives the vehicle a lot to do these little scheduled maintenance procedures I just bought the stuff to do the u-joint Grease fittings not too long ago but didn't harp on it and I don't know if that would have prevented them from eventually breaking off I mean the vehicle is a 2005

These are the only other pictures I had taken of the situation under the vehicle some of the pictures were taken before the slip yoke and u-joint was removed from the vehicle obviously and those pictures will be showing the vehicle towards the front

Guys theres something else im confused about. Most of the listings on ebay say non greasable and i thought it had to be. Also the listings are for different size shaft lengths. 61.25, 65.75 etc. do i have to get under the vehicle with a tape measure a measure to know what i need?

I'm guessing that no one is going to know the actual length without crawling under theirs and measuring it, if they have the same drive and engine as you do.

Hopefully someone with a V6 2WD can measure theirs, I have a V8 2WD and I know it has a different part number than a V6 so most likely a different length, but I do know the 2WDs don't have grease fittings anywhere on the drive shaft, only 4WD have grease fittings.

I found this information in a website that sells custom driveshafts.am i wrong to assume that just by measuring the circumference of the drive shaft if that would give me the actual length like it says on the diagram because I measured mine it was 11 in with a cloth tape measure because I don't have jack stands I don't have a floor jack so I had to slide under there not even with a creeper just with a homemade plastic container lid and I'm already claustrophobic so I wanted to hurry up and get the hell out from under there anyway the circumference diameter ended up being 3.5 0014 I think so would that mean that my shaft length i need is the 70?
