Which looks better?

Our trucks are twins, so I'm very interested in what you do. As a small aside, have you ever considered painting the limited cladding white? My trim is all faded, so I need to get it painted, and keep thinking that body color cladding might look nice. Thoughts?

Black wheels with silver cladding looks not so good to me, too many tricks. Factory 5-spoke 16" wheels would look nice on your rig

Some of the late 3rd gens were available all white...

Its like its wearing a white suit at a cocktail party. Its the 4Runner that a rich guy would take to the ski resort, but otherwise he drives his Audi. I still like the look though.

Yup, that's the look, thanks Charlie! I do like this look, but my concern is that my '97 has chrome front and rear bumpers, so it might look goofy unless I painted them body color as well.

I can tell you what not to do

I do stupid things sometimes(ok most of the time) and this one... I will not do it again.

this was stock wheels vs I blasted and painted them to match the factory color on FJ40's color thinking it would make my T4R as cool as an old school FJ.

it did not.

I think you have to stick with the stock look on wheels most of the time. I'm pretty sure this is because your used to seeing them like that... it's almost like the familiar look is the best.

black out wheels... I have done it... to me look like teenager without any money wants to look like g-man suburban agent.

note: I do like the flat grey wheels now but it took me a long time to like them.

I'm honestly asking myself the same question. I have a black '96 and don't know if I want to paint mine black or if that would just be too much black (is there such a thing?).

I think all black looks good when done right.

Yes I’ve been considering the same thing. All white is still an option for me too as my grey trim is also starting to fade. I’m definitely planning to paint it one color or the other. I need to figure out what to do about the rubber trim as I can tell by looking at it that it won’t survive the removal process. I could leave them on and just paint the fender trim as is but then my eyes would always just see the nasty jacked up rubber trim-gasket-whatever-thingy-strip and it would annoy me.

Yeah that’s my problem with painting my wheels black, it’s basically too much going on with three colors (white, grey and black). If I decide to paint the fender trim white then black wheels will look really good I think. This is probably my most likely route with the fender trim. If I paint the trim white, i may leave the wheels as they are now or paint them black. Either way I think will look right.

Good point, I hadn’t considered all the chrome on our 97s. Definitely something to take into consideration.

Looks good the way it is in my eyes, I understand the wanting to tweek the look.
Something to think on two tone em similar to TRD rims on all white runner.
Tape all machined surfaces, background paint whats showing using same color as cladding or black. Haven't seen that.

A little late to the game on this one, but I also have a natural white 3rd gen. I put tacoma snowflake wheels on it and painted them gun metal gray.

I sprayed them myself with good quality rattle cans. Prep is key to a good paint job. I sanded for a few days, sprayed self etching and filling primer, 5-6 coats of color, 3 light and 1 heavy coat of clear. They’re holding up great! With these wheels you should run a small spacer in the front otherwise they rub the frame at full lock.

Those trim pieces are called "pads" in Toyota speak, like this one for the rear - 6178542010 - Pad, rear wheel opening extension, no. 3. Body, interior - Genuine Toyota Part.

They're reasonably priced (probably less than $100 for the complete set), so my plan was to get a new set while I have the flares off for paint. It's nice to have the fresh flexible rubber pieces, and the sticky adhesive to attach them with .

I'm running just the stock tire size of 265/70/16
