Which Mods to Do First? 5th gen SR5

I am pretty much doing the same thing with my new '15 TE. First I got 275/70 KO2's on it, but the tire shop effed upped my rims, so those may change (on their dime). The front skid, weatherbeaters, and dash cam's are en-route. Next is sliders and lower link skids, hopefully by then I will have made up my mind on which lift I want.

For me - in the following order;

tires,
sliders,
rear locker (I have a Trail - so it already has one),
winch,
lift,
bigger tires,
skids (although this might be earlier on an SR5)
front locker,
differential gearing,
transfer case doubler
solid front axle
bigger tires
triangulated 4 link rear suspension
portal axles
bigger tires
tube doors/soft top
I think that pretty much does it. Just follow my step by step program and you'll be in great shape!

OP, the mods in my signature are listed in the order I acquired them. I would probably consider tires first, considering the terrain you are traveling, and then you'll have to decide what load rating. I went with 33" E's and the trade off is road noise and fuel economy (15.8 on the gauge). If you are considering taller than stock, you'll have to consider a lift as well.

Sliders were first simply because I got them during the anniversary sale with free shipping; the lift, because of the black friday sale. The internet is evil.

But this thing is a great & cheap insurance policy.

- Gobi Rack, and maybe some jerry cans to mount on top (gas and water)

- HAM Radio / Antenna

I second the satellite communications/ham the only thing that sucks worse then getting stuck is not being found in time.

Thanks for all of the ideas!!...I am lagging on getting to work on these mods, but it looks like sliders and tires are the consensus choice to get done first.

Newer 4Runner- The Build Begins

So, I ended up giving my 2015 MGM SR5 4x4 back to the dealership for a slightly better deal on a 2016 Super White SR5 4x4. Aside from the difference in paint color and the absence of minor trail damage :noidea:, its the exact same truck.

I put some good hard miles on the 2015. Did the full Mojave Road trail, stream crossings, snowboarding trips, etc. I must say, the bone stock SR5 4x4 on crappy stock dunlops was a very capable vehicle on its own.

Anyway, this worked out perfectly because I had researched the hell out of mods for the 5th Gen and now I have a fresh canvas to get started. To be honest, I like the white paint slightly better too (and so does wifey, which is all that really mattered).

Here's where I'm at with the mods for the 2016 SR5 as of today:

- Ordered Shrockworks Step Sliders
- Ordered Gobi Stealth- Full Mesh, Ready for 40" LED Bar, Ladder Included for free (not sure if I'll use or sell ladder)
- Received TRD Pro Wheels 17x7
- Received BFG A/T KO2 285/70/17 x5
- Installed Full Set Weather Tech Mats
- Pair of Max Trax Traction Ramps
- Icon Stage 2 (coming very soon):eyebrows:
- Breather/Scuba Mod for Rear Diff (need to do ASAP before hitting any new trails)
- Full RCI (or other) Skids (on wish list)
- Air Locker or E- Locker (down the road, maybe when/if 4Lo and A-TRAC don't do the trick anymore)

If anyone knows someone who might be interested in the 17x7 SR5 wheels with Bridgestone Duelers, I have a set for sale:gossip:

Looks like a great list. I've just purchased a 2016 SR5 as well and am researching sliders

Do you have a link or part number or something for the shockworks step slider? I tried to find it on their website and tried googling it but only thing I can find are "rock sliders" which may be the same thing but they have no steps on them.

I got the Roof Rack Cross Bars installed, and honestly, I'm an IT guy. I'm learning step by step via you guys. But with these bars, what can I haul on the top of my roof safely?

• Cooler? (how would I do that?)

What other stuff have you guys hauled on the roof.

Cooler - You may want to look into a Yakima loadwarrior or similar roof basket that will attach directly onto the bars.

Not necessarily. It depends on the size and shape of the cooler. The load baskets are universal attachment pieces that would attach directly to the crossbars you purchased. Just would make life easier.

I have heard mixed answer regarding whether 275/70R17 will rub or not..... some say it will not, but some experience that it will.... I kind of want to get that too... I am just waiting for the verdict... let me know your result...

I am either seriously thinking about going with BFG T/A KO2, either in 275/70R17 LRE or 265/70R17 in either LRC or LRE (265/70R17 should be coming out in March).

I had that same thought...what did you end up doing?

I totally hear ya. The lift will come eventually. I def want to get a roof rack too. Any specific brand/model you guys reccomend? I've had people mention Gobi which seem pretty legit.

I went away from the general rack builders and went with a little guy. Infidel Garage. Here are some pics. Great price and honestly is a great rack.

Skid plates and sliders are pretty high on my list. As someone extremely new to this, can I ask, how does having the under armor, skid plates, etc, affect the ability to have work done, like oil changes and whatever, if I had to take it to my mechanic?
