Which t4r to buy?ADVICE

Hey guys, looking to get back in the t4r scene. I've had 3 3rd gens before. Loved them all. Its been 4 years since I sold my last one. Im looking at a 00 4runner 4x4 ltd with locker with 129k. I talked the guy down to 7k. Really nice shape. tbelt has been done. Or a 96 4x4 ltd with 157k in ok shape, not sure about the t belt. I talked him down to $3600. I havent seen them yet in person. Just going by the pics and there word. Right now I drive a 5 speed sc300 and Im just looking for another daily driver to mostly use for winter months and whenever I go to lowes. I heard some 96 had some blown head gaskets due to improper install at the factory. I plan on keeping them stock.

Just based on what you said here, I would go for the '00. Newer and you feel that it's in better shape.

Id go for the 96, there werent any major issues with any year in specific with the 3rd gen 4runners, although headgaskets are not uncommon, it shouldnt be said that 96 is any worse than 02. You will save $3500 by getting almost the same truck, the timing belt job is only $800 and the rest of the money you can put towards mods or if the truck actually breaks which i doubt it will break any more than the 2000. I dont see why you should spend that much more money for a car that isnt as worn in yet.

You get what you pay for, and the midgen upgrades are much nicer when you don't have to do them yourself.

4 less years of wear, too.

Yeah thats the angle I too was looking at. Id save about half for the same mechanical 4runner. Better I should just buy both.:lol::

That being said it depends on how long you will keep this car and how well the 96 has been kept. I'd go for the 00 especially if you want to keep it for a longer period of time. no timing belt to do either...

HAHA, I just came back from checking out the 00 ltd t4r. In the ad and on the phone the guy said it need nothing. Well I get there and the CEL was on, also the ABS light too. He the abs was on for a while. UMMM I asked if any lights were on over the phone,you said no. Then he said the CEL barely come on today. I did have my mac tool scanner. 2 o2 sensor came up.. Then to top it off I looked at the odo and it has 147k. UMMMM It says 129k in your listing and over the phone too. So I just walked away. There was a 98 t4r with 188k for $2,500 with a large dent on the rear door, but someone already beat me to it. So now Im gonna check out that 96t4r.
