Mine sound exactly the same. After all this research, and people agreeing with me on the video I uploaded awhile back, I'm just chalking it up to normal sounds for our platforms. I guess I have to upgrade my speakers.

I only recently starting noticing a whine. 2015 with 58K miles.

Same noise on mine. Lower RPMs. Doesn’t go away when warm. Doesn’t increase under load.
No noise until about 500 miles ago (truck is at about 57k). I’m due for an oil change and recall work in another 1000. We’ll see if the oil filter changes anything. If not - I’ll have them take a deeper dive since I have the extended warranty.
Oddly glad to see so many others with the same problem and always glad to hear it’s likely not a serious one.

Just had it in for recall work today, and had them take a look at the whine sound while in. They insist the whine is coming from the alternator and say it needs to be replaced, at $1,200.
Based on everyones comments here, I think I'm going to hold out on getting that replaced.

Greetings all. I've been keeping up with this post, and know that it has been diagnosed by several that it was not the alternator. But, for me, it actually was the alternator. My 2010 SR5 with about 100,000 at the time whined for about 3 months and I thought it was nothing to be concerned with. Then, on a Saturday morning the warning light came on showing a problem with the electrical system. The owners manual said to get it checked out immediately, so I started to go to the Sears where I bought the battery. After about 2 miles every light on the dashboard lit up, and the car died straight-away at a pretty busy intersection.
AAA towed me to my mechanic who replaced the alternator, and after that the whining noise whined no more So, it might actually be your alternator that's going out. Or, it could be one of several other things. Or nothing.
The quote of $1200 is high. I believe mine was $700 or so, and I thought that was pretty high, but I needed to have it fixed as soon as I could.

My 15 has this whine. Brought it to my dealer and they determined it was the timing chain tensioner. Replaced it and the noise is still there. Now Toyota's stance is that its normal. Total BS as it's loud, and sounds ridiculous. Haven't decided what to do about it yet... It started around 30k miles.

Initially swapped out all the pulley, belt and tensioner.
Noise still present
(btw : those who got this noise fixed by changing pulley, oil filter, belt, etc ) .... we are probably not talking about same noise, cus this noise cant be fixed by that. I am pretty sure about that at this point.
After 3 dealerships, I requested a master mechanic to resolve this issue. We got 4 keys from the dealership lock box and decided to test every single 4 runner on lot.
Brand new TRD pro 2019

Used 4 runner 2015 (80,000km) exact same as mine.
Every single one had the exact same whine... at this point I had no point of argument. Master mechanic said, he recognizes that there is a whine, but it is so common and so far there was no failure related to this. He said enjoy the car and dont worry this wont affect resale value either.
So all those who are frustrated, I hope this helps.
I am the worst OCD when it comes to stuff like this, but knowing it's not an issue related to some damage or things going bad... it's easier to accept and live with it.

Strange whining noise from 1gr-fe engine after replacing timing chains
I have a '08 Fj cruiser which also has 1GR-FE engine.
I got check engine light and a code 0016 every 5 days since last summer. There is 90k miles in it. After some research and some test, i decided that i replace the whole timing. After disassembling my engine, i noticed that my chain was stretched and the bank 1 small chain tensioner was off.
I replaced everithing including chains, wheels, tensioners, vvti wheels, and filters, plastic parts. All parts I built in is brand new genuine toyota parts.
After replacing all timing parts, I get this whining noise. It's coming from my engine. I took off the serpentine belt, so it's not from alternator, ac, servo, water pump, idler pulley. What could cause this? Any advice?

Hey, I have that to! I keep telling myself it's a supercharger, cept without the added power. I'm just gonna drive it.
I figured out, what cause this noise in my case. The main chain was too tight. Maybe when I tighten the crank shaft pulley bolt, the main chain tensioner extruded a bit and it's Ratchet mechanisms don't let it to slide back causing it to press the main chain heavier. I just reseted the tensioner and now the noise is gone. The engine sounds like a melody.

Mine has had this noise since I bought it with 3 miles on the odo. Granted, mine is much less pronounced. I only hear it at higher RPMs such as when I’m on an on ramp.

I’m not concerned about it but it is a little annoying. The 1GR is not a quiet engine.

"I noticed the same noise with my '19, and was speaking with the head tech at my dealer. Evidently there is an air pump that pumps air into the engine, and this is what we are hearing and it is normal. It is the same noise you hear when turning off the vehicle, of the system purging. I was starting to worry that something was wrong too, but this is done as a part of the whole ECO process that everyone is jumping on now... I hope this helps..."

I understand that this is the 5th Gen T4R section. Mine is 4th generation 2008 4Runner Urban Runner with exact same noise as shown in the Youtube video in this post. Hope this helps some of you out there.
Three Parts were replaced by my Mechanic and the problem is fixed. I think Tensioner Pulley and the Bearing is what has fixed the problem. He might have replaced the Drive Belt based on the condition of the belt.
Replaced parts:
1. Tensioner Pulley
2. Bearing

I have the noise on a recently purchased 2015 SR5, and it’s a little annoying. I didn’t notice it when test driving the truck. I picked up the noise after cruising it down the interstate, and now I notice it at low speeds too. Is the consensus that it’s definitely not the transmission? I notice it in drive or neutral getting louder with higher revs.
Would love some sort of definitive explanation from the dealers and techs.
