Whiring Noise Going Into 4LO

My 2007 4Runner goes into H4 easy enough, with the occassional prolonged flashing dash light, but engaging 4LO is sometimes another matter. Even on flat dirt with the wheels straight, I sometimes get a very loud whiring noise from underneath when I shift from Neutral to Drive. Is this the actuator mis-behaving, or something else? I can't imagine this happens without causing some damage? Is this gears slipping past one another or something else? Do I need to see a dealer?

Normal. Mine does it. That is the electrical gear making your typical "I am working" noise. Keep exercising it and I wouldn't worry much.

It should not be making any noises at all. Keep exercising it. Make sure it is warmed up and it works much better.
