Whirling Noise when Accelerating

Hey peeps,

I was driving home today and I noticed a whirling noise when going around 40 MPH. I would accelerate and deaccelerate, the noise is hit and miss. I posted a link below if you peeps want to take a look. Tomorrow I am going to grease my drive shaft to see if that rules anything out.

Any suggestions on what it can be? This does not happen when I am in park or stationary.

Took me a second to understand what you were talking about..at first all I heard was what sounded like tires. It gets more clear towards 12 seconds and on.

I was almost wondering if you have an aftermarket radio and its interference or something? Weird man. No CELs I assume, so I wouldn't think its an air leak bad enough to be that loud.

Like you I'd be thinking anything rotational, but it def. doesn't sound metallic to me. I'll have to keep thinking.
 
I am leaning towards the drive belts or the pulleys. you can take one belt off at a time to eliminate that possibility.
 
Weird thing is this even happens at low accelerations, AC on or off, even in 2 or L it still happens. Friend said it might be bearings or a pulley, let’s hope he’s right.

Stock radio for now. Just got rid of my CEL so nothing there. Nothing grinding either, just whirling at low speeds.
 
Pulley bearings is initially what I thought but I thought that sounded a little far fetched. Glad to see I'm not the only one. That's all I could think it would be, I've never heard a trans or diff sound like that, and it doesn't sound like something familiar/obvious like a power steering whine (nor would that make sense either, just saying)
 
it's got a really tiny turbocharger! kidding... get it up on jackstands and secure it really well, rev it to the RPM where would have a good chance of recurring, and listen for that coming from let's say the front of your trans. i'm wondering about a bearing or such in it that might be wearing out and the vibration translates through the floor. i think we'd hear it all the time if it were an idler pully or a belt. once it's up on jackstands and everything's secure, you could also rev the throttle and have a listen under the hood. just keep your shirt tucked in. if you're thinking belts, with it fully off, examine belts for frays that are sticking out and may be hitting stuff. but i don't think they should be spinning at that high frequency. that sounds like something small and soft rotating at high RPM against something heavy and metal... like a polishing disc against a blade.

Interesting enough I was able to get it up to 4k - 5k while in park and was unable to replicate the noise. Now that I think of it I might have my new mechanic check it out since he has a lift and all.

It's just so weird because the noise is hit and miss, at one point I thought it was normal but now it's more noticeable.
 
Maybe the torque converter or front oil pump. A similar thing happens on the 4.0... like a sort of turbo whine and the concensus is its probably the trans oil pump but I've never seen a resolution to it because it's apparantly normal with age. I'd listen to the front of transmission.
 
I'm leaning towards tranny pump or torque converter. When I start it up and drive around for a bit my RPM's will rev at low speeds before it 'catches'. Feels like a slip too.

Dang brotha, I was hoping it wasn't transmission related. I'm sure you've checked all the obvious things, fluid level, trouble codes and such?
 
I'm not a transmission expert by any means but I feel like I've read somewhere that the torque converter in any automatic transmission holds a large majority of the fluid. I don't really know much though, to be honest.
