Who else has two leaking TRDP rear shocks?

I was looking at my garage floor and I saw two small oil spots, and this is what I found.

Both rear shocks are leaking. So I will schedule a another appointment to get the rear shocks taken care of..... I guess these shocks have a definite life span that is less than the warranty period.

I picked this 4R up in the very end of Jan, so perhaps this is an isolated incident.

On a side note, I just had the TSB done one the front two shocks a couple weeks ago and those are working just fine.

So my next question is this... What should I get when my warranty replacement shocks are shot by the spring of 2017 with remote resi?

I figured some fluid seeped passed the seals at full droop. If it occurs again I was planning on taking it for warranty replacement.

I'd get a nice 2.0" or 2.5" Lift Kit in 2017 when they fail.

Those are "Level 1" leaks which is interesting as I don't recall seeing may of the TRD Pro's leaking that badly.

How hard do you wheel the vehicle if you don't mind me asking?

I had it up on the lift today, and have put a couple hundred dirt miles on it since then, with no other leak indications, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I haven't really had it off road yet, except a few fire roads and I live on a dirt road about a 3/4 mile long. My first trip to Moab is next week and that would have been the first real trip....

How odd, they shouldn't be leaking that bad from a fire road... I mean I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see a stock shock leaking some, but the I Billies they put on should be a bit beefier.

I mean I wouldn't think the second set would fail on you early again, but it's hard to say.

Not entirely sure, I was told by a Tokico and Monroe engineer that typical your average OE shock/strut starts to degrade after 50k (not fail, but start to degrade in performance). But these fall under the "performance" category so I am not sure; maybe more, maybe less?

I agree with your view of the "performance category" and I have probably got what i should have out of them since they both failed at the same time.

So, should I look at Kings or ICON the next time around? I'm leaning Kings since they are not digressive...

So I was under the truck sniffing around in anticipation of my new poly sway bar bushings and discovered this. Looks like the drivers side only is leaking. [MENTION=137080]Dog Runner[/MENTION] I was wondering how your warranty replacement went. [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] would you agree this should not be happening? First pic is drivers side, I guess I flipped my phone over so the second is passenger inverted.

[MENTION=117927]TRUSTYAXE[/MENTION] A bit hard to tell from your picture, but it does look like something is leaking under the boot there. If it's under the warranty period it should be covered under the 3yr/36k "Bumper to Bumper" warranty assuming the leak is bad enough (if it is infact leaking fluid to the shock mount it should fall under replacement criteria easily.)

However, I would move the dust cove off the shock to inspect it to make sure there were not any impacts from debris. If there is any contact from debris, you can brace yourself for a possible unscheduled expense, unless if your dealer is super cool and just takes care of it..... But given how most Toyota dealers are a pain to deal with I would always prepare for the worst.

On a side note note, how many miles on your rig and I would inspect the other shock as well.

Will do and thanks for the feedback guys. I just got brand new front shocks from the TRD tb at 32000 miles. If this goes as smooth as that did with my dealer I will have all brand new shocks on my rig at 32-34k miles.

Sounds like you will have all new shocks! I have almost 17k on the new rears and they are still working well.... The next 15k are going to tell the tale.....

I too have had the front shock TSB performed at about 30K miles.

At the 25K interval I noticed "condensation" (as per dealer) where the rear shock reservoir tube joined at the bottom of the reservoir. I too thought I would be getting new rear shocks as well but no. It hasn't gotten any worse and I don't see leaks like you have down the actual shock body.

For comparison in terms of use, I have only wheeled about 180 miles in total (actual time in 4L). These trips were at off-road parks so there was lots of crawling, rock and stump traversing and full-droop flexing.

Yours look pretty bad and I would expect a replacement. Interesting that the pair seemed to fail which would indicate either a bad batch of shocks or something we have to watch out for with the TRD Pro rear Billies.

Thought I would update this thread with the details of my adventures with Toyota today. I stopped by the dealer on my way to work and asked for the same tech that did my tsb to come check my rear shocks out. He looked at my left rear shock and saw the evidence of a leak. He was holding a print out of Toyota's requirements for replacing a shock and although it was a bit murky he said "lets order you some shocks". He then paused and said wait is the other side leaking? My answer was not really, but shocks are replaced in pairs right? Not under warranty was his answer, but lets go inside and get the one ordered for starters. We then consulted the service advisor about just going ahead and ordering both and he said no, can't do it. I persisted that they should be changed as a set and he said we need authorization from Toyota. They ordered the one shock to get something in the system while I called Toyota to get a case started. I asked Toyota who makes this decision and they said it was the service manager, I called the dealer back and they said the district Toyota rep would have to authorize it, and he was coming by sometime today. I ran the vehicle back over so the rep could examine it whenever he passed through. (they would not say when). Got a call from the service advisor this afternoon, come get your truck, the rep agreed to replace both shocks. The new shocks should be in tomorrow and they will call me when they arrive. My gratitude to the decision makers at Toyota in my area.

I crawled under my pro today to glance at the diff as I was thinking about installing a breather on it and noticed my driver's side shock was leaking already. I have less than 3000 miles on it and have only had it off road once and that was for less than 2 miles (got stopped by a sign saying no motorized vehicles beyond this point). Nothing high speed, but did need 4wheeldrive. Should I be worried about the other one starting to go ( maybe a bad batch) considering how quick this one started leaking?
