My V8 Limited started to make a strange metallic clicking in the front when accelerating. Found a mechanic specialized on 3rd gen. T4Rs. He maintains dozens of 3rd gen for a large energy company in this area.
He immediately recognized that the chain of the transfer case was the problem. The chain skips on the gearwheel, which causes the metallic sound. Removing the transfer case means that the vehicle would run with 2 wheel drive, with power only on the rear wheels. We will check if the transfer cases for the 3rd gen fits also on my 4th gen. On the outside, the size and construction looks like the same.
I asked the mechanic if this was a known problem, and he just pointed to a good dozen of transfer cases he had lying around in his workshop, saying that it is a typical T4R problem.
Its the first time I hear about that. Wanted to check with the forum if anyone else had the same problem?
What did you do? Did you replace the entire transfer case? Is there a way to fix the chain and the gearwheels? Any good source for 2nd hand transfer cases?
