who here has the highest milage 5th Gen?

My 13 limited is around 288,000 miles and running strong. I do need to do some suspension work in the front. I know there are even higher milage 5th gens out there. Just curious how high. I do not plan on selling. Its super nice driving a paid off vehicle.

CutthroatSlam has an early 5th gen with something like 330k+ miles on it. Highest I know of here, but not the only 300k model I've heard of.

Engine will easily make it to 400K, more like 500K. I suspect I will be replacing transmission at 400K.
Is yours acting up? These transmissions are known to be very stout. My uncles' 2006 auto (same trans) made it to 350k before selling, and he had towed 50k miles with it

On hard stops from a couple gears up, then stomping the go pedal, there's a delay before engsging into 1st. On regular or hard acceleration from a complete stop, the shifting is normal. I also expect to replace upper and lower control arms.

What would list as top things that would need replacing leading up to 500k? Assuming general moderate driving-no heavy offroading, hard towing, etc.

1) Shocks
2) brake rotors and pads (multiple times)
3) Tie rods (1x)
4) Alternator (319K)
5) Fan clutch (332K). Should replace as preventative at 250K
6) Transfer case input seal (342K)

As far as the transmission, on harder stops from a couple gears up, if you stomp the go pedal it has a delay finding 1st gear. Otherwise normal acceleration from a stop all gear shifts are fine. I will try to look for a low mileage takeout and swap it in myself somewhere around 400K to 450K. Rear main seal started to leak, but a bottle of Blue Devil rear main seal stop leak fixed it. Still, when I pull the transmission, I will replace that seal. Otherwise, the engine runs as good as new and still gets the same fuel mileage.

I ponder this-At what mileage do you make a move, and what move is it? Are all the high mileage folks just taking it to the limit and then replacing the motor with a good used engine? Are you hitting 300K and getting a lower mileage 4Runner, curious what people are doing.

I bought my wife a 2023 ORP to get one of the last 4.0L V6 4Runners due to their proven reliability. Due to the miles on the 2014, it has been taken off the long distance driving list and relegated to local, winter and off-road driving.

The engine in the 2014 is showing no issues. I fully expect it to easily go 500K. As noted the transmission is showing signs of going out. Confirmed this with my local mechanic. Today I picked up a takeout A750F transmission with 43K miles for $800. Seller had it listed for $942 on eBay and accepted my offer of $800. Also a provided free shipping from Spokane to Missoula.

Transmission was salvaged from a wrecked 2016 4Runner. Figured they couldn’t F up a trans that hadn’t even reached its first fluid change. I have new pan seal and filter/strainer and new rear engine seal, plus front pump and rear output seals are on order.

I threw the transmission in the back of the 2014 and drove it straight to my local mechanic for install. I would do this job, but I’m out of time on this segment at the Montana home and head back down to SoCal starting Friday afternoon and back in the LA office Monday.

It's great to know that these can go that many miles and keep going. I figured 300k easily, but with you now approaching 500k, this thing should last till I die. I bought my 2018 new and it currently only has 50k on it, and since I don't drive it often now, it will probably only get driven 5-6k per year.

As long as we have the ability to harvest organs like they do from Chinese prisoners, I have the ability to keep this 4Runner going for cheap. With this $800 transmission, I just avoided a $5K to $6K job at a dealer.

I think about long distance trips too. What is the range you feel comfortable driving the 2014?

We’ll still do the 1,250 miles each way between Stevensville, Montana and Fullerton, California in the 2014. That said, the 2023 ORP is doing most of these longer trips.

I generally make the call based on how the 2014 is driving. Engine shows no issues, but recently the transmission was showing delayed drop into 1st on sharper stops from 30 mph or higher. So we took it out of the longer trip rotation and it’s now in line to get the transmission replaced.

Thanks for the info. I am torn as I need to drive 600-900 miles trips but don't feel like buying a newish 4runner-that for all intents and purposes, would be exactly the same except less mileage than my 2011 Limited.

Have you ever changed the transmission fluid? The A750 has done a million miles in a 2007 Tundra, behind the 2UZ-FE 4.7 V8.
