I didn't travel for mine (had it shipped), but I bought mine in Philly, and lived in west Michigan.

I didn't travel, but I bought mine from a dealer about 500 miles away. My mom lives in the town I got it from, and the dealer comes up to my area frequently to an auto auction. He was driving up anyway, so he delivered it for free.
He's lucky he made it, the belts were about shredded. It wasn't exactly in "great" condition, as described, but I still got a good deal on it.

yeah, the guy says he wire brushes and paints the frame each spring to keep it as fresh and strong as possible

Mine I drove about 7 miles to get. lol Although i should get honorable mention. A couple years ago I was going to fly to PA to pick one up and drive back home to Oregon.

Keep in mind the other components as well. The rear upper shock mounts for example are super susceptible to rusting out. As well as if you plan on wrenching on it yourself, rusty nuts and bolts can be a nightmare to deal with.

I had to drive through both portlands, kinda counts I guess. When we would fly to Maine to see the wife's family we would do Portland to Portland.

From Bowling Green, KY I flew into Denver, and then picked up a rental and drove on up to Casper, Wyoming where my truck was waiting. Some might think that is a bit much (19h, 48m drive home, or 1,320.8 miles), but I was having a hard time finding a five speed, factory e-locker truck, and I wanted one. So I went and got it

Paid the mechanic of the friend to go ahead and do the timing belt and water pump prior to my arrival, picked it up one night, used saved points for a hotel room that night and then took off back down to Denver the next day. Stayed at a buddies place that night and checked out the area for a bit before heading out the following day.
Stopped at a Sears to pick up a tool kit (just in case right?) and then headed back east. Once I got back home, I drove to our local mall and returned the unopened tool set, as the truck treated me quite nicely the entire trek back.
Fun thread. Interesting to see others stories.

Bought mine in Oklahoma City and drove back to Denver. Roughly 700 miles with a pit stop in Wichita to see family.
I think [MENTION=30600]00Spork[/MENTION] has most beat. He's bought two 3rd gens from Ohio, and one from Connecticut and drove all three back to Denver. I don't think he posts on here anymore though.

Got a call from my brother who said I can have his 97 SR5 V6 auto 4wd for free if I want it. Since he lived in Arizona and I live in Wisconsin, I decided to have it shipped the 1900 hundred miles instead of driving it. He thought I should have just drove it back but I've made that drive before. Never again.
So I paid someone about a grand to get my 4runner and bring it to me, 1900 miles away. Does that count?

I flew to Boston, MA from Kansas City MO to get by Imperial Jade Mica '99 Highlander.
The drive home to St. Joseph, MO was 1450 miles...about 22 hours.
I've also flown to Philadelphia to pick up a 4Runner in Villanova PA and drive it back home. As well as driven to Texas (twice) get two different 4runners.
I've owned 5 3rd gens, and my sister and brother both have one as well.

In Jan. 2014 I rented a uhaul car trailer and drove from my home in Hattiesburg, MS to Savannah, GA did the deal and hauled it home. 1,200 miles round trip but it was a super clean 1-owner 2000 4wd 5-speed. Haven't regretted it for a second.

I took a Greyhound bus from College Station, Texas to Richmond, Virginia (1,350 miles) to pick up my 4Runner. It departed CS at 5:00pm on a Thursday and arrived in Richmond around 10:00am Saturday morning. I could not afford the flight to pick it up.
I drove it back to College Station and made it home around 7:00pm Monday evening. I spent Sunday night with relatives in Mississippi. This was back in October 2015. Overall it was a good trip, but the bus ride was rough. The long trip was well worth getting my 4Runner.
