Howdy, Austin folks. I'm new to the 4r world, and fairly new to Austin. Does anyone have any recommendations for shops in Austin? I had my timing belt and water pump replaced by my family mechanic when I was in Dallas for Thanksgiving, and now I'm getting a p0016 p0018 code - camshaft/crankshaft out of position. I'm leaning towards taking it to the dealership to have it looked at, but thought I would check and see if anyone has a trusted shop they recommend. Thanks in advance for your help.

I just picked up a 4Runner a couple days ago and I'm stoked! I'm in South Central Austin (Oltorf/Riverside area).
Mechanically, she's great, but I have found a couple minor problems with her (looks to be HVAC related). Any friendly people care to help me look at it? More details on the issues here.
I'd love to lend a hand at a wrench day and eventually make it out to Hidden Falls with y'all once I get to moddin'!

Depends on where you're located. I've always lived in the north part of Austin so I'd recommend Qualtech off 620. They do good work for a fair price. Toyota wanted to charge me $1200 to replace the water pump and timing belt on my V8 4th Gen. Needless to say, I left. Turns out nothing was bad there was just a small leak at the intake. The guys at Qualtech found it and fixed me up for $200. It probably would have been less, but if you have a V8 you know why it's a little more. I've taken all my cars to them and have always felt good about my experience. They are very understanding about price and ask before just running up your bill like the stealership.
Now I live in the Pflugerville area and I'd recommend Three Points Automotive. The owner has a 4th gen T4R and is always fair on the work and price. Of the times I've been there for service (not just my T4R) I've only paid once. If you're mechanically inclined they usually just help you diagnose the problem and tell you what needs fixing. I appreciate them saving me money where I can so that makes me loyal to them for the big stuff.
If you had the belt replaced its very important they lined up the teeth of the belt in exactly the right way. Otherwise the timing is off. There is a great YouTube video on this. A guy goes step-by-step on how to replace it on a Lexus GX-470 (same engine as T4R). Don't have the link just now, but I can find it and send it to you.

Just traded in my girlfriends Jetta towards a 5th gen 4runner! We have our first child on the way and I was not a fan of the Jetta anyways.. So a 4runner was the only logical choice as our family vehicle! Looking forward to a 3" OME lift and 285/70R17s sometime in the future. I have a Tacoma myself. It's currently in "sleeper mode" with 265s and my fender flares reinstalled. It usually runs 315s. Hoping to take our 4runner out to Turkey Bend soon and teach my girlfriend how the 4x4 works.

New owner here. Live in the 620/2222 area and just picked up a '05 limited v8 2wd. Loving it so far. Any tips or advice is always welcome

Not really. Pretty much just a few dirt roads that lead to the river. Be very careful the closer you get to the water.. I've seen a lot of people stuck out there.
