Who's running LC springs and Bilstein 5100 3rd gen shocks in the rear?

Okay, I know this topic is has been covered before but I can't find a thread about it.

I have some LC 7.5/8 wrap springs that I want to use with my BS 5100 3rd gen specific (24-249966) rear shocks. I'm currently pairing the 5100 rears with OME 906 but with added weight from camping/wheeling gear, the rear sags. Plus I want to get an aftermarket rear bumper with dual swing outs in the future.

The BS 5100 is meant for 0-2" of lift but the LC springs gives around 4" from what I've read.

Is any running pairing the LC 7.5/8 wrap springs with BS 5100? Any issues? Would rather not spending money on another shock.

You'll need longer shocks for sure. Sonoran Steel sells a lift with 7.5 wrap land cruiser coils and he offers it with tokico black shocks or 4th gen 4runner rear shocks. 1996-2002 - Classic System 1.2 [96-02_complete] - $1,575.15 : Sonoran Steel Fabrication LLC, Toyota Truck Parts

These are the 4th gen 4Runner shocks he offers it with for the rear: Bilstein 5100 Rear Shock Set for 2003+ 4Runner, 2007+ FJ Cruiser (33-187174 x2)
14.91 collapsed and 23.5 extended compared to 12.91 collapsed and 20.79 extended with your current shocks.

They will be too short.
Not sure if you will damage anything but you will not have any down travel.

I run the FJ/4th gen rear 5100 they are great.

So far I have not.. or have not noticed anything.
I run extended durobump bumpstops which are designed to be ran with these length shocks. I asked the owner guy before getting the shocks.

FYI I run LC 8 wraps if it makes a difference

I too had those bilsteins when it was stock height and I liked them so much that I wanted to get the same ones when I lifted it. I ended up going with the superflex coils and came across long travel 5100s for up to 4” lift and it is basically a 4th gen bilstein shock. So that’s what I went with and it feels great

Here's a pic comparing the LC 7.5 (Double Purple light blue White)/8 (Purple Green White) wrap I just installed today with the OME 906 I had on.

The LC's were from a '91 FZJ80. The OME had about two years on them.

I got about 2.5" increase with the LC's on both sides.

Im running the same setup 5100s with the same 7.5 lc coils you are. I had them for almost 2 years now. I do alot of hard wheeling amd they work good nice flex too

In order to not start a new thread about this exact subject, I'm running LC 7.5 wrap coils now and the Bilstein 5100 24-100144 shocks. The rebound speed is too fast IMO and I end up with a pogo-y ride. They are very firm when compressing them to get them installed or when just pushing them down by hand, but they extend really quickly. I bought them 5 years ago, but never got around to installing them until recently. Anybody else feel like this particular shock is too soft for this application? I tried these same shocks with 891 coils and they are just really underdamped in my experience. I can't in good conscience sell them to anybody. I don't think they're "bad", just wrong for the application.

I have also tried OME 60028 (Firm) shocks with both sets of coils and they are far too stiff. The rebound speed on those can be measured in minutes. I originally had the 891's paired with the OME 60027, but they were 13 years old and had gotten rusty. The upper bushings were pretty shot and the stem washer was rusted to the threaded stud. They rode just fine. But, I figured I should retire them due to all the rust. So, I tried the 5100s I had with the 891s and had a bouncy rear end.

I had the 60027s paired with 3 different rear coils over the years, an NWOR progressive 3" spring, a Downey Off-Road 3" linear spring and the 891s. They were never harsh like the new 60028s. The 60027s are listed as the firmest of the OME shocks. I bought the 60028s since I liked the 27's with all the coils I had tried them with and I figured the 28's would be a better fit since they aren't supposed to ride as firm according to the product literature. They were punishing with the 891s, and the 5100's were unusable, so I got a set of the LC coils from a forum member, installed them and it still rode like crap with the 60028s. Sigh.

I've ordered a set of the correct LC shocks from ToyotaPartsDeal.com to go with the LC coils...

Those are Tundra rear shocks - meant for a leaf spring suspension. Leaf springs have built-in damping (friction) - so shocks for them will be much differently valved than a coil-sprung suspension. Most have reported they are poorly valved for the 4Runner...

Yep. Can confirm they suck for this application. They are sold as the "soft" shock for 2-3" lifts on a few sites. As I said, I bought them 5 years ago and never got around to trying them out until this year. There are a lot of parts being sold for these trucks which are just a really bad fit for these vehicles. It's amazing how much bad info there is out there. I hadn't been on any forums since the mid-2000's until this year. So, I prolly missed out on some good advice during that time.

Watching this thread. I've currently got 2" spacer front and back and someone in my wheeling club is offering LCs for free, don't know how many wraps yet (hoping for 7.5s, I don't want too much rake before I tackle the front) and it would be good to get the right shocks for the springs first time around if I grab them.

What exactly kind of ride are you going to get with those? I am focused at least a tad more on offroad performance (anything is probably going to be better on or offroad than my current 2" spacer lift that the PO says was on there).

My hope is that they are in between the punishing stiffness of the OME 60028 shocks and the spongy softness of the Bilstein 5100 24-100144 shocks that I own. They're supposed to be a great match for the LC Coils. I actually liked the OME 60027 shocks when they were paired with a linear spring. I'll update you when I get the Tokicos installed and have some drive time on them. They are en route and should be here by Thursday. It takes me about 1 hour to swap shocks in the rear of the truck. Don't even need to jack the truck up.

Good to know because I found them for stupid cheap from a local stealership's webstore. If those coils turn out to be 7.5 or 8 wraps then that would be a great combo I think. Might not be that much added rake I'm finding as I think I have more like 3" of lift in the back currently (guy who sold me the truck said it was 2" spacers front and back ><)

I paid $48/ea. They showed up today. Compressing one of them by hand and timing the rebound speed tells me that they are indeed between the harsh OME 60028 and the too soft Bilstein 5100's I have. I look forward to installing them. They came with new bushings and a top nylock nut, but no stem washers. I ordered a set of stem washers and bushings that fit these shocks. The new bushings have the centering lips built in. That is how most manufacturers make their bushings. Why do I need a separate centering washer? Isn't that what the hole on the upper shock mount on the truck is for?

They won't be here until next week. So, we wait.

Sweet, they should handle up to 4" lift right? The ones I found are 8 wraps supposedly 19.5" inches if we are reading the color code right (I'll measure them when I get them tomorrow to see if they are shorter from age, no history on them, but hey they are free lol).

I'll be watching for you to post your results to this thread, I'm very curious to what you find out. I'm fighting suspension issues as well, my extended travel Bilstein 5100 shocks in the rear are just way too bouncy. My OME 906 coils and Shrockworks bumper (with tire carrier, tire, and hi-lift jack) simply overpower the shocks, they barely provide any dampening at all.

In my 25 years of modding vehicles, finding a suspension lift that doesn't ride like crap has been my weakness. I'm honestly a believer now in running coil spacers with OEM shocks for as long as I can if I can get away with it. Obviously now with 500lbs more in the back of my 4runner, I had to upgrade from the stock coils and old shocks.

I like the idea of running a Toyota LC spring with either a LC shock or a 4th gen 4runner shock...it will keep the components OEM Toyota. Old Man Emu shocks are too harsh and Bilsteins are too bouncy...in my opinion.

They're limited to a 2" lift but I'm very tempted to try these if all else fails...
