My guess is (like stated above) is price point. I've built many a Jeep into rock monsters. Fairly inexpensive to buy and easy to build ...but that's the Jeeps achiles heel. Not too expensive, easy to mod, awesome to scale boulders ...then it SUCKS to DD.
Before my new 4Runner I had a F150 Raptor. Awesome truck, but it was so damn expensive that the idea of modding/offroading it made my wallet hurt.
IMO, the 4Runner is the perfect "in between" vehicle. Not overly expensive and fairly easy to build. Not the rock monster that a Jeep can be, but more than capable of dealing with 90% of offroad situations. AND ...most I'm importantly, a nice comfortable ride for overland fun and the DD drag.
