Why are these key fobs such crap?

I will say that having just traded my '07 for a '16 one thing I miss is the auto-crank feature that all 4th Gens had. Just turn the key and let go. I assumed my '16 had it until the test drive and was disappointed.

There were several things I had both my gen 4s that I wish I had in both my gen 5's, starting with the V8. But little things like the plastic panels in the cargo wall storage areas. While there are +'s, there are also minuses. In this key fob thing. I would literally rather have the old trusty key with a fob on the key chain than this POS.

I'll agree with you on that one. Plus, they got rid of the rear window button which makes no sense. I loved being able to roll the rear window down with the press of a button without getting into the vehicle.

I might be misinterpreting your post, but I roll my window down by inserting my key into the liftgate lock cylinder, and hold it towards the unlock direction. After a couple seconds the window starts to roll down. Rolling up is reverse direction.

Ah okay good to know. I was referring to the lack of a button on the key to roll down the rear window. The key fob for the 4th Gens all had a dedicated button for the rear window.

Any luck programming the transponder on your new keys? I got the key cut and the fob works the lock/unlock but won't start it. I've tried a couple of the sequences I found online, inserting the key etc but to no avail.

Finally with a picture to show you where to take the chip from. If you bought fobs with chips in them already, I'm not sure how you will get them out with out destroying the thing. I bought mine on amazon chipless on the cheap.

Having posted the picture, those that don't know what the inside looks like, or how little "tang" there is, can now see how frail this thing is.

If you do some research on ebay/amazon/google, you will probably be able to find a remote case that will allow you to drop the OEM transmitter into it, then just get a standard key made at an ACE hardware or locksmith shop.

I have an aftermarket flip key fob for my 4runner. stuffed the electronics into the new housing, hacked the old case open to get the little chip out, stuck it into the little spot in the new housing where its supposed to go, and haven't had any issues for the year I've been using it.

When I was looking around, there were TONS of different types, and I recall seeing one that was just a remote, no key in it. This way you could just get a metal key with no electronics, and as long as the little rfid chip is in the remote, you won't have any problems starting the car or getting into the vehicle!

I have damaged keys before and IT was how I carried the keys . when working they would get stressed out . I use a clip on my pant loops and have had no problems .

Problem is, I don't have an old fob. Wife lost her key so that left us with one. I'm trying to get a working spare. It's cut just fine and the lock/unlock works. I just need to figure out how to get the 4runner to recognize the new key to allow it to start the engine.

Easy enough to reprogram, you can either take it to dealer to have them add this key and remove the other key that was lost, or you can buy the techstream cable and install software on a laptop to program it yourself, as well as have the ability to change other things on your 4runner.

Search for techstream and/or programming keys, you'll find a few threads about this subject.

I guess I'm lucky, no problems with either of my FOBs for 5 years now for a 2011 LTD, hell it was Dec, 2015 that I changed the batteries, and that's with 78456 miles on:thumb3:.

The key fob is not very nice, the first time I got them from dealer I was like WT... I expect little better looking and quality for a 40K truck!:lock1:

It is the chipped key. I programmed the fob using the techstream software. Are you saying that getting the 4runner to recognize the new chipped key can be done with techstream? If so, I'd appreciate it if you can tell me where it's hidden. I've clicked every tab I can think of and cannot find it.

Search for either TIS or Techstream, and some other keywords like programming key, I know its been talked about on several threads. I'm pretty sure [MENTION=85467]BobsTrail[/MENTION] said he programmed a new "g" key with TIS, maybe he'll chime in--that is, if I mentioned his screen name correctly!

Yes, I was able to add my e-bay valet key to the 4Runner registration using Tech stream. I don't remember where in the menu to go, but I will search and try to find it again.

I think it was in an odd place, maybe immobilizer section. I'll post it if I can find it again. Some times I suffer from CRS.

Quick update. I was playing around in Tech Stream and found how to program the key. Maybe someone will find this helpful.

After you connect in Tech Stream,

click on the Body Electrical Tab >Immobiliser > Key Registration

Follow the on screen instructions.

It seems pretty obvious now. I was searching under the customize tabs and never thought to look under the Body Electrical tab.
